Question about 1998 Chevrolet Malibu

2 Answers

My son has an 98 Chevy Malibu, it wasn't starting so he took it to a Checkers and they put it on their manual diagnostic machine and said he needed a battery. So he bought a battery and it still takes some cranking to get started. He said he bought some cheap gas, and it did have a bad smell to it, so we were thinking it is the fuel pump or fuel injector. Everyday it gets worse and worse and now it wont start at all. Could it be the cheap gas? or possibly the starter?

As long as it cranks over I wouldnt say it was the starter, I would do a fuel filter and a gas treatment in the fual tank with some fresh gasoline, to get it running use a spaybottle filled with gasoline, spray into the throttle body as someone cranks it over just spray enough to keep it running till it runs on its own. I hope it works for ya let me know if the problem persists...

No the starter only cranks the motor if it is cranking the motor over its good . you might have bad gas with water in it , a clogged fuel filter , bad fuel pump , check if you have fuel pressure with a fuel pressure gauge , check if you have spark at the plugs then reply findings on this post hope this helps

This light is on all the time. I took it to 3 direct places and they put the machine to diagnose y they tell me no codes are faund. They don't know what can be bad on my chevy malibu 2012.

That might not be a engine code light (faults). It might just be a reminder light to have the care brought in for a tune up. Check your car manual, it should explain this.

98 Chevy Malibu will start but dies in about 5 seconds. Have replaced fuel pump and I have fuel pressure. Have been told it could be the theft system. There are no diagnostic codes.

have you checked the spark plugs themselves? Vacuum leaks & the WRONG fuel pressure will cause the same effects. Pressure regulator, etc.

Hi I own A 98 Chevy Malibu, my ignition locked n i had to put a new ignition switch in, well now my cars tellin me Something Theft Service. Im wonder what I need to do? Iv unhooked battery for hours ect...

You need to reset the theft system. To do this, try to start it. It should start and die. Then after it dies and the theft light is flashing, leave the key on for 10 minutes. After 10 min, the theft light should go out. After the theft light goes out, turn off the key. Count to 5, then restart it. Then it should work.

check the transmission solonoid..

you will need to get a diagnostic done to find out if thats the problem.. most likely its that,, or the transmission belt that needs changing.. in eighter case you will need someone with diagnostic machine to scan the cars computer for that!!

You probably have a large vacuum leak. With the engine running, listen under the hood for a hissing sound. Check all of the rubber lines running from the intake.
