Because its a ford ! no just kidding its common with those starters because of the cat converters and exhaust giving off a lot of heat there try buying your own starter at autozone or pepboys and asking for the one with the lifetime warranty its more money but as long as you have the receipt you will get a free replacement hope this helps

My 1984 cutlass calais is burnin threw transmission every 6 months and cant seem to keep a 350 turbo kno longer than a yr

Next time you change it, be sure to flush the entire system out. Including the lines and cooler in the rad. Possibly filings in your oil, and it is shortening the tranny life.

Service engine light is on, had it checked a Advance Auto they said it was the knock sensor. Where is that located and what does it do.

it located on the side of block or cylinder head it detects "spark knock" . the pcm will adjust the timing if spark knock is detected . other words some gas has least octane so if engine is put in strain it will adjust the timing for more power and keep engine from detonation(burnin vavle or piston)

It's not too bad. I just replaced my starter on my F150 pickup. Safety first. I suggest you get 2 jackstands. Strongly recommend you DO NOT truch just the car jack.

Disconnect the ground lead of the battery. There will be 2 (sometimes 3) wires going to the starter. A red heavy duty wire that comes directly from the battery. Disconnect these wires. Remember where they go. Remove the lower bolt first, then the top one. It helps to have someone to hold the starter up just as the top bolt comes out. The new starter should come with a new solenoid already mounter on the starter. Bring the old starter with you when you go to get the new one, otherwise there is a $30 core charge until you bring the old one back, BTW, I would get a rebuilt starter rather than a new one.

Installation is the reverse. Be patient, take your time.

Hope this helps. THanks for contacting FixYa Loringh
