Question about 2000 Volkswagen Beetle

1 Answer

HI, I would like to know what the transmission sensor look like. Is it easy to replace it? I prefer that the picture(s) and/or video that show how to replace it? However, there are TWO opinions about the transmission. One from auto zone said that I need to replace the transmission fluid/filter and other said that I need to replace the sensor. While i drive the car, the speed won't change until it reach 40 mph. Do you know which opinion correct, sensor or fluid/filter? Do you know where I get them? My car is year 2000 VW Beetle 2.0

That would be fluid and filter first and foremost. Supposed to be changed every 75000 miles anyways.
There are nearly two dozen malfunctions that can put the trans in 2nd gear and not allow shifts. However because your speedo still works I would question whether the problem is the output speed sensor since that is necessary for the speedo also to work.
I would recommend that instead you go to a trans shop or dealer that has a diagnostic readout box that can ask the trans controller to reveal the fault code that put it into this condition, which is known as limp-in mode. You might even get a free readout at a parts store (e.g. Autozone), but in any case a reader with the ability to ask the Trans for the code is necessary. It connects to a 16 pin socket that is under the dash, usually to the right of the steering column. The code will begin with a P and have 4 digits. Also ask for the name of the problem, and what are the possible fixes, and how much each will cost as an estimate. I would not buy any sensors until you have the code readout, unless you want to have spare sensors around just in case. But they are around $80 each and are located on the side of the trans with the dipstick and vertical shift tower. The input sensor is near the front of the trans while the output is at the very end of the trans, both about mid-line high and similar in appearance. By the way, have you checked the level of fluid in the trans? It could cause limp-in if too low.

Need to know how many sensor. is on my transmission.. 2003 Pontiac Montana v 6 .. can you show me picture where transmission control solenoid goes?

There are 12 common sensors and 10 internal sensors. The most common that often fail (MAP), (TPS), (CAM), (IGN), (CRANK) MAP is your mass air flow which is located at the beginning of your air intake, TPS is the throttle body position sensor, the CAM is the cam shaft position sensor (transmission), IGN ignition position sensor and the CRANK sensor is located near the bottom driver side front

The range sensor or neutral safety switch as some call it is mounted on the outside of the transmission where the shift cable post is located, the sensor goes over the post. See picture below.

Need to replace bank 2 sensor 2 on 2003 toyota highlander , where is it located

Bank 2, sensor 2 is a heated O2 sensor located below (after) the catalytic converter on the passenger-side. When this sensor gets clogged and/or goes bad from rust and heat fatigue, the voltage drops low enough to cause the electronic control module to register error code P0161, which then causes the check engine light to come on.

To replace Bank 2, sensor 2, remove the debri shield from just behind the front bumper, underneath the vehicle. There will be 10 bolts holding it on (10mm, I believe). After removing it, look toward the center of the newly exposed area and you will see 2 finger-like objects projecting out from the engine with wires coming out of each. The one on the left (passenger-side) is bank 2, sensor 2. The one on the right (driver-side) is bank 1, sensor 2.

I got my direct-fit sensor online for $55 from Remart Auto Parts. I know it is tempting to get the universal-fit type and save the cash. But after doing that once, I wouldn't care to do it again.

I found a YouTube video showing pictures of where the two lower (after catalytic converter) sensors are located. While the video only points out the driver-side sensor (bank 1, sensor 2), it's easy to spot the other one being only inches away.

I have 2001 vw beetle and my transmission surgers... what can i do for it

On some volkswagen Transmissions you can reset the computers shift plan by doing the following. Starting with car off in park, turn ignition to ON (but do not start) then depress the gas pedal for at least 3 seconds, then shut the car off, start and drive. This resets the computer's shifting plan for some VW's and you can expect some hard shifts after this reset, but it may help with funny shifting. The afore stated speed sensor is also a possible culprit.

Find and replace speed sensor

Hi,

On Top of the Transmission. You can see the Black sensor just under the Air Breather Intake assembly in front of the driver side. It has an electrical wire connection and is bolted onto the tranny with (2)5/16" hex head bolts and (1)1/2" nut that holds the throttle arm to the sensor. Very easy to replace.

Thanks.
