This sounds like a clutch problem mostlikely the preasure plate is broken and jaming the clutch system, i would start by remove the trany and checking the clutch out.

YOU probably have a problem with the clutch not fully releasing when you are driving.

Clutch Drag Kills Synchros

Feb 02, 2016 | Isuzu Cars & Trucks

1 Answer

Engine revs but no acceleration

Clutch plate and pressure plate seem to be too weak to pull the car. Or one of the CV joints is detached from the gear box. To test the clutch plate, park the car on flat surface. Pull the hand brake up, start the car, depress the foot brake pedal, depress the clutch pedal, put the car in 1st gear, press the gas pedal and leave the clutch pedal at once, while keeping the brake pedal depressed.
Follow one of the two following statements:
1. Engine does not shut down and remain start. (Clutch plate, pressure plate and clutch bearing defective - Replace all as a set)
2. Engine shuts down. (Clutch system is OK and does not require any repair).

sounds like a bent tooth on a syncro gear in the trans

1985 chevy corvette ginding noise in reverse fluid on the garge floor.

Well in that case, there may be something wrong with the syncro's (not sure of the spelling) pronounced sing-crows, or possibly an issue with your flex pate. From what your describing, the clutch is not allowing the tranny to fully engage into reverse, wich can mean one of two things. The gears are not lining up because they are coming up shy of where they should be, or, they are passing where they need to be.

1998 jeep wrangler dont shift into 1st or reverse

I will bet it grinds when you try to engage first or reverse. When this happened on my car, I adjusted the clutch and it improved. You need about a half inch of free play when you first touch the pedal with your foot. If you have a slave cylinder, (hydraulic clutch). You may need to bleed the system. With air in the system, you can't get enough clutch to fully disengage the trans from the motor.(Clutch and pressure plate) It's like you only pushed down half way on the pedal. If it's not hydraulic, it should be adjusted with wrenches. If clutch is fine, It could be a loose shift linkage. It would seem extra sloppy when moving shifter, It would just not go in gear, with out the grinding.Hope this helps. lbreen

your clutch might be worn, was any of the oil you changed somewhat metallic? Ive heard to check for a worn clutch: pull the car up to a tree, put a tire or some kind of cushion between the car and the tree put your car in its highest gear, give it gas and very slowly let your clutch out, if the clutch is good the car will shut down immediately.

REVERSE GEAR

A shifter popping out of gear could be that the shifter linkage is not adjusted right. Therefore not allowing the gear to be fully seated and when power is applied it forces it to pop out of gear.
