Question about 2004 Chevrolet Cavalier

2 Answers

My timing chain went and they are telling me that it is an intereference engine and should have belt rollers... What does this mean and the car was not driven when it went it was merely being started. I still owe 2500 on this car and its a 2004 chevy cavalier with 153 thousand miles on it

If it broke while being started you more than likely have very little piston or valve damage even if it is an interference engine which I am not sure of. I have no idea what they mean by belt rollers when talking about the cam chain. It is a chain not a belt. You should be able to remove all spark plugs then spin the engine over with the starter an check the compression. If the compression is good then you more than likely have no serious damage. At that point all you can do is replace the cam chain and see what you then have. Once you get this fixed, sell the car.

Hello, what this menas, when the tming chain breaks on this engine, it will cause the pistins to hit the valves in the cylinder head,. this causes the valves to bend. this requires the removal of the cylinder head to have the valves replaced.

Just anted to confirm that my 2005 buick rendezvous has a non interference engine as i need to replace the timing belt/chain and was concerned with driving it

you need to say what engine it has ( 4,v6,v8)
a qualified mechanic always treats an engine as intereference fit regardless because either engine can have valve damage when the failure occurs
If you have not broken a belt or chain and you set the timing marks up properly before removing the belt or chain and do not turn crank or cam/s after the belt/chain is removed there will be no damage done
that only occurs when the crank is or cam/s are turned without the connection to each other

I was driving my Nissan Maxima engine made a weird noise engine shut off wont start timing cover broke what to do now

That doesn't sound good. Sounds like your timing chain broke, which almost certainly means you have valve damage too, as at least one set of valves would be down when the chain broke and the piston will have made contact.

Some Maxima have belts, but the fact it broke the cover, leads me to believe your is chain driven camshaft.

It is a big job best left to a garage.

Timing belt breaks does it hurt the valves

kia engines are classified as intereference engine which indicates that if the belt breaks there is a high possibility of bent valves
it als o means that if the belt is off and you have not released the valve clearance to maximum the turning the engine over will bend valves

1.4 corsa bakkie does it bend valves when timing snap?

check the timing cover
if it is plastic , it will be a belt drive and you could be lucky
if it is metal , it will be a chain and it is an intereference engine which means bent valves
because yo have failed to include details like twin port , car model , year (Remember corsa bakkie are american nome only) it is difficult to be exact with the answer

Does a 2007 Golf 1.9tdi s have a timing belt or chain, and when would they need replacing?

Autodata publications show it as a timing belt
recommended timing belt change at 80.000miles
this is qualified by driving conditions , highway speeds , dirt , dust and oil leaks all of which will drastically reduce the service life of the belt
the engine is identified as an intereference engine which means valve damage if the belt breaks or the replacement is not done according to correct procedure
the labor time in an accredited service shop is listed as 3.8 hours
if you have been having the services done according to the service book it should be correct in what has been ticked
you can always verify it at a service dealer shop
as the manufacturer runs engine with both chains and belts , you can verify it is a belt if it has a plastic cover over the area of the timing belt.
if it is a chain it will be a full metal cover

When dose a timing belt need to be replaced on a 2003 express van?

This van has a timing chain, which should last for the life of the engine. The LS engines, which I'm guessing you have one of the 4.8,5.3,or 6.0L, use a high quality roller timing chain that is long-lasting, and won't give you issues. Also, having roller lifters, the camshaft puts less resistance on the timing chain, so the combination of a strong chain coupled with less resistance, makes for a reliable chain.
