Go to NAPA (only auto parts that carries this part) it's about $20, remove the console, remove the insert and install the new one (sometimes they can be difficult to install) or Saturn has both cables ( that's the only way they sell the part) at a tune of $200

I have an 04 Chevy cavalier. It was driving just fine but last night I went to leave and the gear shift wouldn't go in gear.. It. Just slides back and fourth.

Sounds like the cable broke. Where shifter is, The bezel around the shifter pops off. You can get it high enough to see if it broke the shifter cable mount or not. If it did, you'll have to replace the shifter.

Automatic gear shift in 94 toyota tercel stuck

what is stuck?

the linkage or the cable from the shifter to the trans.?

block the tires so the car can not roll away...
open the hood and remove the cable from the shifter on the transmission.
see if you can manualy move the shifter on the trans.
if that moves... you may need to replace the cable (shift linkage)

Nuetural switch cable what does it hook to, and would it cause the motor not start.

The cable comes from the shifter and goes to the transmission. there you will find a safety neutral switch. Mounted to the transmission. remove the cable, pops off. remove the cable arm and nut. two bolts remove the switch. some times you have to pry the old switch off. The switch can keep your car from starting.

I put a new shifter cable on my 93 accord.. it says its always in drive even when its not and it doesnt feel like it wants to stay in gear?? what could be wrong??

Check the plastic shift indicator. Most likely it popped off the shifter. The indicator has a piece that fastens to the shifter. Check to routing of the cable. Most likely it's not routed correctly where tension from the kinked cable is pulling on the shifter. Recheck your installation and you'll probably spot the problem.

I have a 1999 plymouth grand voyager and the gear shift is sticking in park. Any idea on how to fix this?

Found this maybe it will help your problem:

To shift out of park one or two things must happen. First when you depress the brake a solenoid or cable releases a lock. A defective solenoid, relay or a blown fuse or a broken or improperly adjusted cable can be the cause.

Some console shifters have a bypass. It may look like a place to insert the key or a round plug that will pop out.

The button on console shifters when depressed pushes down on a rod that runs down the shaft. That rod releases a lever designed to keep you from accidentally knocking your shifter from drive to reverse. The button or rod can wear or break.

I have a 2000 impala, which a friend of mine had my shifter cable installed. And now its stuck in second gear. The shifter goes up and down but it's not catching which leaves it stuck in second gear!...

It sounds like the shifter cable has popped loose.  You should be able to see the shifter cable on the transmission.  See if it is disconnected there.  If it is not, then the cable most likely popped loose at the shifter end.  You might be able to see the cable at the shifter end if you raise the vehicle (safely!) and crawl under there to see it.  Otherwise the shifter will have to be removed to inspect the cable connection on that end.

My saturn automatic shift will not go into any gear,

Sometimes pens, coins, etc... fall down through the shifter seal and get lodged in the park lock cable not allowing it to release the shifter. When you step on the brake pedal the cable unlocks the shifter allowing it to move (safety thing). Remove the shifter console and inspect for foreign objects in the shift linkage. While inspecting with the key on (not running) keep stepping on the brake pedal to see the action of the cables under the shifter. Then remove object causing the cable not to function. If this turns out not to be the problem, then pop your hood and locate the top of the transmission. Find the shift linkage and see if the jamb is there. I sincerely hope that this suggestion helps you to locate the problem. Best wishes.
