Question about 2000 GMC Jimmy

2 Answers

2000 gmc jimmy, engine shut off while drving and would not restart. Checked fuel pump and pressure, found fuel filter to be clogged. Replaced fuel filter and started vehicle. Problem now is that vehicle idles okay but sputters and loses power under acceleration. Also, emitting whitish color smoke and has an odor. Could this be a problem with bad gas ??

Well, I think that the latest problem could be a symptom of a blown head gasket. The white smoke, can indicate that antifreeze is going into the cylinder, unfortunately. It would have a sweet smell.

Bad gas, is not a usual problem in the U.S., anymore.

But, if you think it is bad gas, then you could change out the fuel and add fresh fuel to see if the condition gets better.

I don't think it will, though, without service to the head gasket (possibly).

Check the spark plugs for signs of antifreeze contamination or fouling.

Good luck on this repair.

No,it sounds like coolant burning inside the engine combustion chambers. This explains the sputtering and power loss.most likely cause is a blown head gasket or severe overheating.Check the condition of the oil and make sure their is not antifreeze in the oil. Also check the coolant level.this will help to identify an internal engine concern.Dont think the fuel filter going out is related though. Hope this information helps,

you say fuel pressure is good, but what is it? what is the fuel pressure when it stalls out? Spec is 60-66 psi and it wont run if its 55 psi. the fuel pump relay should be good if the pump runs. Make sure the ground for the pump is good , G402 should be on left frame rail. you may have had it off to replace the pump? maybe? it may be time to stop guessing and have a repair shop diagnose it for you. You sure have replaced a lot of good parts.

Replace the fuel filter first. When you turn the key on, the fuel pump should run for a few moments, then turn off. If it keeps running, then replace the pump as well. Suggest having the fuel system pressure checked at the engine itself. Hope this helps!

Have you checked for spark. These are known for bad distributor caps and bad fuel pumps.

Jimmy wont start sometimes

Do you have the 4.3L engine with spider fuel system? That system is noted for problems. Key on engine off, fuel pressure, 60--66 psi, use a fuel pressure gage. It needs that pressure to start, after it starts, it will run with less pressure.
There could be other issues? Engine cranking, you have spark at the plugs and fuel injector pulse?

you need to know what the fuel pressure at the fuel rail is (you can measure fuel pressure with a cheap gauge from harbour freight tools) it should be between
50-60 psi if not then the pump must be replaced
(gm replacment pumps are lifetime warranty )

yea you have no fuel and sound like a bad harness and the gm's are know for there fuel pump harness's! did you change it when you changed the pump? there is a lose connection somewhere in the fuel delivery system and it's pretty simply! i would check the fuel pump relay on the left hand side of the engine compartment and maybe even put power to the pump at the relay position "b" on the fuel pump relay harness and there should be a one pin connector to put power to also connected to the same position on the relay "b" the wire should be tan and white! good luck
