This is an evap concern which is the name for a pressurized fuel system.you most likely have what is called a gross or major leak.If the fuel cap doesntt fix it then there is a major leak elsewhere in the system.numerous things could cause this like a stuck open evap purge solenoid,a cracked or damaged charcoal canister. etc...i recommend you take it to a shop that has the capabilities to use a leak detection machine to locate the leak instead of throwing more parts at it with false hopes of repairing it.Alos the fuel pump o ring or seal could be leaking causing this also.po440,po441,po442 are a few of the evap codes that the computer will set for this vehicle.
Hop this helps,
Kenneth R.

How do I get the check engine light on my 2006 Toyota Avalon to go off? A loose gas cap was the culprit

Hello Tom:

You can reset the check engine light by clearing the DTC code(s) at the ECM port using a code reader; or by disconnecting the ground (negative) battery cable from the terminal post of the battery- wait 5 minutes, then, press on the brake pedal or turn on the headlights to draw any remaining (residual) voltage current out of the electrical system.

Replace the ground cable to the battery...restart the car.

Should the check engine light come back on, the problem was not just with the gas cap, you will have to use the code reader to pull the trouble codes...and based on the code(s), you will then have to perform diagnostic troubleshooting to trace and locate the component part(s) that are triggering the events. If you suspect a particular part or several parts, you will have to test them at the component level to see if it or they are operating properly or are malfunctioning.

Evap emission failed what is this

It's an emission control related problem, there is a leak in the fuel vapor recovery system and could be caused by a number of things, the most common are a vapor hose off at the air filter so check the air filter hose connections, it's common for the evap system purge hose to be disconnected from the air filter, next is a gas cap that is not sealeing, try replacing the gas cap with an OEM grade gas cap, then disconnect the negative battery cable for ten seconds, this clears the codes, wait and see if the check engine light comes back on and which codes came back.

Evap Emissions Problem. Specifically Purge Flow. Check to make sure your gas cap is on tight. Disconnect negative terminal on battery, drive up to 50 miles, if code comes back. Replace Evap Purge Canister.

The engine light came on and the gas cap was loose, now the light won't go off, can you tell me how to reset the computer without disconnecting the battery cables ? it is a 2004 Sebring, V6

need a diagnosis tool, reset codes from it--autozone can do this for free. sometimes the code will go away after X miles of driving. This is a OBDIII issue, again a Tech II or scan tool can erase the code.

My warning light came on after i got gas/my

Not sure why the security light did not come on. But I'd start with the warning light.

There is a pressure sensor that is affected by the gas cap. If the cap was not on properly it will sense it and trigger the waring light.

Unscrew the gas cap and reinstall. Drive for a while and the light should go out.

Sometimes the computer will not clear the code. If this happens disconnect the negative terminal on the battery. Leave for half an hour or so and reconnect. This can delete the code sometimes.

Gas cap loose warning keeps coming on and after a while the check engine light comes on. had it to the dealer 3 times still happens.

simple really--- i have 2 jeeps and my daughter has one also--2 libertys and 1 cherokee--this has happened a couple times--what i did was remove the gas cap--carefully remove the rubber sealing ring and clean the rubber ring and the cap seat where the ring sits.( a clean rag will do this ) before putting the gas cap back on--i disconnected the battery cables--neg 1st and then positive--waited ten mins or so and put gas cap on 3 clicks --then reconnected battery cables in the reverse order-pos 1st and then negative-tighten connectors--then turn key on till bell stops then off--(do this 3 times) then start jeep--should be good ta go--reset your radio settings--as what you've just done is reset your computer--worked perfectly for me everytime--also has worked on a few friends cars that I've reset except for one and she needed the Evap sys module which went bad---happy motoring !

The engine light came on, I took it to the dealer and they said it needed a new gas cap. I purchased a new gas cap but the light is still on 3 days later? I was wondering how long it could take for the...

The light needs to be turned off with a scanner. Try the store where you bought the gas cap and ask if they have a scanner. If not, try Advance Auto or Pep Boys. Alternatively, you can disconnect the battery negative cable or the computer fuse for several minutes, but this will cause the loss of radio and other engine settings that may need to be relearned by the car automatically after a few miles of driving.
