Question about 1985 Mazda RX-7

On my 1985 rx7 12a does both leading and trailing spark plugs fire all the time?

The coils might be wire in reverse polarity. The FSM diagram shows that the B/W ground wires go to the terminals and the yellow striped wires go to the - terminals which is different than most.

Engine valve timing


This is a simple engine to work on. Check for compression in the dead cylinder. If low or none, you found your problem....likely burnt exhaust valve.
If compression good, check injector for fuel spay or fuel delivery head for fuel delivery. With engine idling, crack each line nut at the fuel distributor and see if any fuel squirts out.

If so, check spark delivery by pulling lead to dead cylinder and install used/spare spark plug into plug lead. lay this against engine and run engine watching for spark at plug tip. Do not touch the plug or wire while engine running.

If no spark, check distributor cap for cracks inside. The electronics are primative on these so the above should get you close to the reason cylinder is not firing.

Plug wire configuration


Quite easy actually. There are two rotors 1 - front and 2 - rear. there are two plugs per rotor Trailing - top and Leading - lower.
The distributor cap has letters and combination letters/numbers on it (if it does not you need to get a good quality cap) L and T and L1 T1 L2 T2
L is leading coil, T trail coil, pretty self explanatory from there
My recommendation from nearly 40 experience with rotary's is to use Mazda Mitsubishi Cap Rotor and NGK wires and plugs. Has been good enough for factory race teams also.
An issue with most aftermarket rotors is that they do not fit properly and can cause changes in timing and worse case, damage both cap and rotor.

#2 misfire fouled spark plug in sunfire


yes bad leads will be one of the faults
run the motor in the dark raise the bonnet look for sparkle trails
on the leads

coil pack could be faulty

compression test will tell if it is a leaky valve

back fire can be running lean or timing

My 1985 ford bronco will not fire out of the distributor but it will fire out of the coil


Check the distributor cap for cracks or dirt that can short circuit the spark.
Check the leads and the rotor. if there is spark at the coil then you are loosing it at the distributor or the coil lead.

The trailing spark plugs have no spark


I have only recently fixed this problem on my 2004 RX8. My trailing sparks were not working causing misfire in 2nd cylinder. Common problem is the coil packs. Each plug has a seperate coil pack and unfortunately not cheap.

I changed all four plugs and all four coil packs which cost me around 30 per plug and 80 per coil pack. If you call around you will get these prices, however mazda charge over double so do not go there!

You can get away with only the trailing as a cheaper option but the strain may cause the leading to go aswell!! I only got my rx8 a week ago and already shelled out 800 on it!! Wish i kept my BMW now!

There are 2, the leading you turn the dist to line up the mark, then the trailing you move the trailing vac advance to line up the mark (about 10mm after the first mark. It usually never needs to be adjusted unless someone has messed with it. Its hard to describe without a diagram.
