We have changed the sending unit, fuel pump and wiring. With the new pump the Blazer won't fire. Put to old pump, sending unit and wiring back in the tank and it fired right up. Where is the main ground strap located on the vehicle?

We added a new fuel pump, new sending unit and wiring as the vehicle also dies intermittently. With these new additions the engine wouldn't fire. Pulled them out and put the old ones back in and it fired right up. Since we have some intermittent problems we thought it might be a problem with the main ground for the wiring. Where might it be located?

If there is a ground problem causing fuel gauge to fluctuate, it may be actually a problem with the sending unit in the tank.

One should disconnect the sending unit in the tank from the harness to see if any fluctuation still occurrs which would narrow it down to wiring, or the gauge in the instrument cluster itself.

Good luck on this repair.

I looked up 'ground strap' and 'ground' on my online resource and couldn't find a main ground strap reference regarding the fuel level gauge. However, I looked at the electrical schematics and it said that the wire is black with a white stripe for the fuel level gauge.

On Ford vehicles one can look for ground straps that hook to the exhaust and the body.
But, in general, I would say that the main ground thick wire goes from the neg. terminal of the battery to the chassis. And, the main positive wire goes to the starter from the battery.

I'm thinking that the new parts you got were not altogether right if it would not fire up as it did with the old parts.

I thought you had a problem only with the gas gauge.

Hi my 1998 Nissan micra k11 fuel gauge keeps fluctuating changes the sensor in the tank still the same

In a conventional system the tank sensor provides a variable ground path for the gauge which is fed by a stable regulated voltage from the instrument regulator. Sometimes the regulator will fail and cause a fluctuating voltage supply depending on engine speed, whether the lights are on or off and suchlike. Mostly such fluctuations, if they seem random, are caused by a less-than-perfect connection somewhere, mostly the fuel tank ground connection. Newer systems use a computer to drive the instruments but excellent connections are equally important..

On my 93 chevy s10 4x4 blazer, my instrument panel worked before new motor was put in, after having the new engine put in, my fuel gauge, oil pressure, voltmeter, rpm, and my temp gauge all quit worki

Look for a missing ground strap from the engine to the body or frame. Remember the engine sits on rubber mounts so that ground strap is essential.

Fuel pump relay gets hot on a 1995 s10 blazer

Most likely a bad connector on relay or the fuel sock needs to be replaced. if the sock is plugged it would cause the fuel pump to work hard and cause it to heat the relay and make it hot and removing it will cause it not to run. check the connectors to the relay see if they are opened up in the female socket if they are use a dental pick to close them up with. otherwise replace fuel pump and sock at that age with the alcohol in fuel it's killed the pump and sock.
