What should a multimeter read on a continuity test on the coil packs? i'm getting 1.9,1.7,1.7

The multimeter can read the resistance and if it is not open or shorted out, I'd say that your readings are in the normal range, comparing each resistance with each other + or - 10%.

I looked up the resistance readings on my online resource, but they did not list it specifically.

I looked up the following on autozone.com:

There are 3 dual-tower ignition coils that are part of the ignition control module (ICM). The ICM contains coil driver circuits that command the coils to operate. The Powertrain Control Module (PCM) controls each dual-tower ignition coil by transmitting timing pulses on the ignition coil control circuit to the ICM for the proper coil to enable a spark event.

  1. Inspect the spark plug wires for proper orientation.
  2. With the ignition OFF, remove the fuel pump relay.
  3. Crank the engine and test for a strong spark on each cylinder spark plug wire using a suitable spark plug tester. Ground the companion cylinder spark plug wire of each cylinder when it is tested.

    If a strong bright blue spark is present on all of the cylinders, remove and inspect all of the spark plugs for proper torque, proper gap, wear, damage, and fouling. Replace the spark plugs if necessary. If there is no spark on any of the cylinders, test the ignition voltage circuit of the Ignition Coil Module (ICM) for an open/high resistance or short to ground, or test the ground circuit of the ICM for an open/high resistance, or a faulty ICM. The wire circuit resistance should measure less than 3 ohms. If there is no spark on any of the cylinders, or spark is weak or intermittent, test the IC circuit for an open/high resistance, or a faulty ICM. The wire circuit resistance should measure less than 3 ohms. If spark is present on one or more of the cylinders, inspect and test the spark plug wires for arching, cuts, rubbing on other components, and proper resistance. If all tests are normal, then the system is operating correctly.

How do I check the coil on my 8n to verify it is OK?


A digital multimeter is required for testing the resistance levels of the ignition coil. The terminals of the coil are going to be marked "negative" and "positive," and these are the two points where the resistance of primary winding can be measured. Step 1: Prepare the multimeter
To check a 12 volt coil, set the multimeter to at least a 200 Ohms setting. Attach both leads of the meter to the coil-terminals with black to the negative terminal and red to the positive one.
Step 2: Test the resistance
The normal, acceptable range for a standard 12-volt car is 1.5 to 1.7 Ohms. See if the reading is within this range.
Step 3: Test the secondary coil resistance
Set the meter to 20K Ohm setting, and attach the leads to the ignition coil's center terminal. The reading for secondary-coil resistance should be 11, because if it is lower, that's the reason why sparks are not appearing

Chrysler neon not fireing on 1 and 4 cyl


I would be more inclined to think the wiring in the coil pack for that coil may have a problem. Have a shop check your ignition system, before springing for a new pcm. There should be a hot wire to the coil primary wire going to that coil. May have to run continuity tests on the wiring for the coil pack. Or if you could find a used coil pack, and use your good coils on it to try it.

what country? this is the WWW, post country for better answers.......!
Only a scope can see the fast 5mS signals to the coil.
so its either the coil pack or the ECU blown. (wires are always suspect)
you never said , all 4 are dead, or 1 or 2, and how many packs.
some non usa cars have wasted (2pak) spark , not 4 COPS.
state what cylinders have spark and which don't.
there are only 2 ways to fix cars.
1: guess and swap parts
2: use tools. my guess is you dont have them.
some coil packs are active (ignitor inside) others just a coil.
you can test the restance of the coils, with a DMM , ohm meter.
if active you cant.
the fsm covers this on all cars.

the 2006 Forenza as delivered to USA has.....
has a large single, dual wasted spark coil pack. (brick)
it does in fact have , internal ignitor drivers. inside. so can not be tested
with and ohm meter on the primary side. but can be on the secondary
you do know how to test wasted spark , right, All spark plugs must be
attached and grounded for the coil to work,
1and 4 are shared.
2 and 3 are shared.
so to test , you must keep the spark plugs (both or all 4 is best)
attached and the shells of spark plugs grounded.
there is a fuse that powers the coil pack. (usa)
the fuel pump relay sends power to the coil pack.
so of that is dead,so will be the pack. (im reading FSM as it type)
get an FSM.
pin 2 on coil pack is power. 12v.
pin 1,is spark 1&4 drive (fast ECU pulse)
pin 3 is 2&3 coil drive. (scope can see it)

recap, are you using the correct wasted spark testing method.
and are all 4 spark plugs dead.?

Car will not start in cold weather... back fires and putts... HELP!!


Check your ignition coils.Take a multimeter and remove the plug wires.Now the coils are all paired so you need to set your multimeter to read ohms.MEASURE THE RESISTANE ACROSS EACH SET OF COILS.They should all read within 1000 ohms of each other.If not replace the coil pack assembly.

HOW DO YOU CHECK TO SEE WHICH COIL PACK IS BAD ON THE CAR?


To check the coilpack just get a test light ground it some where on the block then press the the test light on the head of each wire at the coilpack. You should hear a change in the way the car idles, if you get to one of the wires and the idle does not change, that is the cylinder that is giving you the problem; but it could be dead cylinder and not the coil pack.

In other words...
1. Set the dial on your voltmeter to "Ohms."
2. Touch one of the leads on the voltmeter to one of the electrical terminals on the coil pack. There are two terminals: one on the top of the coil pack and one on the bottom. It does not matter which lead from the voltmeter touches which terminal on the coil pack. Then, touch the other lead on the voltmeter to the other terminal on the coil pack.
3. Check the resistance. The display on the voltmeter should read between "0.0" and "0.05" Ohms. If it reads higher than "0.05" Ohms, then you need to replace the coil pack.

Number one cyl on coil pack not firing, all others are, codes reads misfire on 1 cyl should i replace the coil pack and how do you test the pack


Check the spark plug first. then if the plug is good you wil need a digital ohm meter to test the coil pack. if you need to know how to remove the coil pack let me know, to test put on ohms should not have more than 2 1/2 ohms restance betweent coil lead to coil connector. If you test the coil pack on both sides of the pack and get a reading then the coil is bad, if it does not read then you haave a bad fireing plate diode.

I have no power to my car it wont start. we tryed to jump it but wont start. dose any one know anything about 1998 ford contour


What motor is in it?? If its a 2.5 l then it may be the main fuse located beside the battery, otherwise there is a maxi fuse located under the coil pack. You would have to remove the coil pack to check it. Its about 3 inches long with terminals on each end, below where the coil pack is about 6-8 inches down. TEST IT WITH A MULTIMETER SET TO RESISTANCE OR CONTINUITY.

Hey Willy..The maxi fuse is located under the coil pack. Remove the four screws (9/32" socket) and look about 8" below where the coil pack was sitting. You may have to remove one of the spark plug wires to be able to move the coil pack out of the way. The maxi fuse looks like a box about one inch wide and four inches long with a red battery type wire coming out of each end. With a multimeter set on continuity check for continuity on each end of the "box" by touching both wire ends with the probes. If there is continuity the fuse is good if there is no continuity then your altenator may be shot. Go to a parts dealer or equivilant and have your altenator tested before you try to remove/replace it. Hope this helps..WF

If you have a volt/ohm meter, you may want to first ohm check the resistance between the two spark plug towers on each ignition coil pack. Simply remove the spark plug wires from each coil pack and test. Both (if good) should test about the same resistance, (about 5-7 kOhms, but I don't have the exact specs handy on this particular vehicle. The reading may be higher, maybe around 7-12kOhms) but nonetheless, the reading of the 1-4 coil pack should closely match the 2-3 coil pack. If not, the new coil pack may be faulty and should be returned for a replacement.

Also, when you remove the 1-4 coil pack, take a look at the primary spade connectors (2 lugs) coming out of the ignition module. Make certain these are clean and free of rust or corrosion. If so, simply (and gently) use a finger nail file or 400 (or equivilent) sandpaper to file the corrosion off and re-attach the coil pack.

If one or both of these don't fix the problem, you may have to look at replacing the ignition module. But only do that after exhausting the other simpler and less expensive tests! :)
