Its the problem of electronic shift module. That is called ESM.This shift module is controlled by cars computer .If the ESM gets faulty then car computer will show this error message called park assist system service. In this case the ESM has to be replaced. But for you information i will mention that there are many other users too facing this same type of problem in jeep commander. If your jeep commander is in any kind of warranty then get it replaced from your dealer for free. Also if in case not in warranty then get the ESM checked by the dealer or local car garage. Also if you get your car scanned at diagnosis center, then you will receive the error codes pointing the faulty part causing this problem,so you can get the exact faulty part replaced as per the error codes detected. For more info i will say that, at www.autozone.com its absolutely free to get car scanned to retrieve error codes. If your car is not under warranty then you can get it scanned at autozone for error codes.

Thanks. Keep updated for any more query. You can rate this solution and show your appreciation

if you are speaking of all the shift positions being surounded by brackets like [r] [n] [d] [l] than thats likely the problem the part can be cleaned its located beneath the shifter bezel or replace it the part is about 450 to 500 bucks but try the foorums i know ive seen a writeup with pictures there

Hi there from what I can see this seems to be a common problem. I found this link to how one guy dealt with the problem. I hope this helps. The thread shows a common problem with some jeeps of this vintage.

Here is another site but I did not see anything there. http://repairpal.com/jeep-commander-2006/recalls_and_tsbs#tsb_13510

Here is another. I hope this helps. You can always call the dealer if you don't want to go in for service.

2006 jeep commander check engine light stays on after jeep sat for 5 days in ice storm and was not started

I don't think I would be concerned about the vehicle sitting for 5 days. Get it scanned and work on a fix,for why the light came on.

How do you service park assist system on a grand cherokee?

I got a 2007 jeep grand cherokee diesel and at times the service park assist will flash and the engine light will come on. a box forms around the gears on the display and it feels like it trannys slipping and its rough out of 1st gear. if you throw it in neutral then back to drive everything is fine again. After hours of research i found that you have to get your computer flashed. It if commom for many people and the dealership wont know what your talking about. so you have to lets them know!!!! else they have no clue

What does "service park assist system" mean on my 2008 jeep?

The park assist system detects objects 59 inches or less in back of your vehicle, to warn u so u don't strike the object. I'm guessing that since the service park assist system comes on in the ice and snow, the monitor is detecting something (ice and snow covering the sensor). If u clean off the snow and ice, the message should shut off.

Is the hand brake working properly because if the rubber and springs used to brake the rear wheels is loose, the security assist system goes off and usually a bell rings and what not.
