Hi:

Sounds like your Thermastat is Stuck Closed. Replace it and Should Solve your Problem.

If this does'nt then Check for water in your Oil and oil in your Water, This is a signof a Blown Head Gasket.

I drive a Camry V6 3.0L Every time I top up the coolant to the recommended level and after driving the contents in the reservoir boil over and spill out.


There may be a slight head gasket leak to the coolant jacket, not large enough to overheat the engine. It is normal for some coolant to escape at operating temp, but not lots, and it should cool down to about the recommended level again.

Something is pressurising the coolant jacket. Have it tested for the presence of combustion gasses in the coolant. This is a simple test.

Another thing, that model often develops a crack in the radiator plastic top tank. It is not the problem here, but worth knowing.

Car coolant boiling but not overheating what could be the issue? In a 2006 chevy impala


How hot does the engine get in degrees F? If it is boiling the coolant is overheating. Does the radiator fan work? Check the thermostat, check coolant flow through the radiator. Could be head gasket issue? Sometimes air in the system can cause problems? Just my opinion.

Overheating


Overheating can be "boiled" down to a few issues:
*blockage: Something is stopping or slowing the flow. Main suspect is the thermostat. It is designed to open and close at the proper temperature so as to keep the engine at the optimum temperature range. They have a tendency to lock closed and cause overheating. Sometimes it's random. The blockage may be something like sludge or rust in the radiator or gunk that someone put in that does not agree with it.

*coolant/water loss. A leak somewhere. Blown head gasket, cracked head/block, hose, etc.
*pressure loss. This happens when the water gets to boiling temperature but is kept under control by pressure (pressure resists heat) and then something such as the radiator cap releases the pressure and the temperature rises. The coolant will also leak out and then the overheating will be due coolant loss as well. This is especially true with the Cadillac Northstar. The head bolts allow the head to lift off the block, ever so slightly, and pressurize the coolant system with exhaust gases beyond radiator cap pressure limits. It's usually when you accelerate or put the engine under load such as going up hill.

^check for exhaust gases in the coolant. smell it or buy a kit to test.
^get a new thermostat, or, test the old one by boiling it in water on the stove; see if it opens. I always get the "failsafe" kind: fails in the open position.
^check for oil in the coolant or coolant in the oil: grey sludge.
^check for leaks on the ground.
^test the radiator cap. some part stores have a way to test them.
^check to see if it's made by Cadillac. look for the word Northstar. If so, hold on to your wallet. There's a whole new world of overheating adventures.

Coolant tank boiling


if the engine is not overheating, and the coolant tank appears to be boiling, chances are you have a blown head gasket which is pumping air into the cooling system the only escape for that air is the coolant tank

you have a blown head gasket.. doesn't have to have coolant in the oil for a blown head gasket... if hoses are rock hard when running then you have exhaust leaking into the coolant via a blown head gasket...

Hi Odnanref, If the coolant is boiling you have a problem with the cooling system. If you cannot see a leakage have the thermostat in the engine checked and replaced and hope that you have not overheated the engine to the extent of needing a cylinder head reconditioning job carried out. The AC is effected because the condenser is mounted in front of the radiator and depends on cooling from the fan. If the engine overheats the AC will be unable to cool. Regards John

2000 firebird overheating coolant orange color. Was warming up in Driveway.


The coolant was boiling, am I correct in reading that? A muddy, dull orange color is bad. From what you've told me, it sounds like the coolant was never changed. What happened, then, is the coolant that was in there lost its anti-corrosion properties and started rusting out the coolant paths and radiator. The boiling over can be caused by one thing - the thermostat. What most likely happened is either the thermostat froze up or it is clogged with particles of rust and metal. My recommendation to you is to take your car to a radiator shop and have them look at it. If the damage is as bad as I think it is, don't be surprised if they tell you you will need a new radiator, thermostat, hoses and maybe a water pump.

Overheating when driving no mixing of the coolant and oil


The three most likely thing's cause overheating are faulty thermostat,electric fan or clogged radiator. Only at has been overheat so much it boils dry that it will cause engine trouble. Most common problem's are blown cylinder head gasket or a cracked cylinder head.
mixing coolant and water depends on where the gasket has blown or head is cracked. You will first need to check if it actually is overheating. The reason is. If the head is cracked or gasket blown then you can get a false boiling which is compresion from the cylinders blows through the crack in the head or gasket causing the coolant to blow out of the radiator cap.Fill the radiator to the top leave the cap off then start the engine.If the water blows out then you will need to remove the cylinder head check the gasket is ok. If its damaged replace if not get the head checked for crack's. If no water blow's when you start it check the thermostat is working properly. To check the thermostat put it a in a saucepan cover it with water bring the water to the boil. It should open before the water boil's but near boiling-point. If its ok then start the engine again leave it running until it boils and check the fan is running. If that's ok then its radiator problem. Their is no way to check if the radiator is ok you will need to get a new one. One last point. If the cylinder head or gasket are faulty it was caused by overheating so by just fixing the cylinder head problem is not a cure it will overheat again. Check the three things I mentioned at the begining and told you how to check them. Hope this help's. Cheer's

yes some systems have to be burped or the boil over can occur in the motor and cause head gasket issues..at 195k i think you should check the system for leaks and thermostat if it is opening at right tempatures or is slow..plus the vented cap on your radiator check with vacuum gauge if it holds about 12-14 psi before it vents...

Overheating


Hi,
If the car is overheating it could be due to a thermostat which is stuck in the closed position, a failed water pump or just a slack belt driving it. I think there will be a "little" tube carrying coolant from the engine to the coolant expansion tank, and if you run the engine with the filler cap removed you should see water coming through that pipe IF the rump is running. A failed water pump will not necessarily leak, it just won't pump the water round the engine.

Always take care when dealing with a pressurised cooling system on an overheating engine - the water may well be above boiling point.

If you run the engine without coolant the cylinder head may well warp and repair bill will be huge.
