I can only assume that you are having the oil changed at a local "lube shop". $19.99 oil changes?! There is a difference in the quality of oil filters used. Make sure that they are using the correct oil wieght which will be in your owner's handbook. Also use a Toyota oil filter. You will notice a difference and the oil pressure will be held during a cold start so that the valve lifters properly oiled and pressurized. Have the oil changed at the dealer or at least with the dealer filter and see if it improves. Let me know.

No noise is normal especially with low miles. If they will not address the issue, get the service manager or call the 1-800 number in your owner's handbook. Talk to a service rep from Toyota so they can get involved and corrected to YOUR satisfaction.

This is an engine oil lubrication concern.Your oil that you have during first initial startup does not have enough viscosity in it. (not thick enough) .The quickest and easiest fix to this problem is to go get an oil change with a new filter, and also install a quart of Lucas oil stabilizer along with the new oil. This acts as a top end lube also and helps retain the pressure in the hydraulic lifters, which will get rid of the annoying tapping sound. This stabilizer is around $14 and is well worth the investment.Do this at every oil change interval and you will be quite happy.I hope I could help and please rate me accordingly! Thanks!!!

Hi this could be either low oil, or your oil is thin and needs changing, or the tappets them selves have warn dependent on the mileage and when they get hot, the gap then decreases and stops the noise, what you need to do is either get them measured when they are cold, and find out if the gap between the tappet and rocker are correct, is this not under warranty? only 2 years old? i would take it back to the garage and find out as this should come under the warranty hope that helps

well i can assure you this is not normal, it would be normal if it was a diesel but even still it should not rattle at the top of engine no matter what type of fuel it is, i would contact the warranty company who supplies the warranty to the dealership and explain to them what is happening, they might ask you to get a second opinion from another place, make sure you insist this is carried out or they will just try fob you off like the dealership has tried to, is there another dealership in the area? it does not have to be the place you bought it from so long as it is a Toyota dealer, they still have to look at it...but do not except their answer it does not rattle at the top end unless there is a problem.....good luck

No this is not normal, any decent mechanic will tell you any rattles from an engine, weather minor or major are NOT normal, especially on a 2 year old car do not take any bull, this is not right and it should be sorted..good luck

Hi! I strongly suggest that you have your valve clearances checked. They are surely not even and will definitely require adjustments. After the procedure you'll be good. Hope this helps and thank you for using FixYa!

I have a 2008 civic that started making a tapping noise. It was low on oil. After adding oil, the tapping did not cease. Runs great, but noisy. Any thoughts?

A quart or 2 low shouldn't cause any problems or noises. You need to determine what part of the engine the noise is coming from, does it need a valve adjustment? Is the noise rhythmic, or is it random?

My 2001 sienna makes a loud tapping noise upon startup, but then quits after 10 seconds. Is this serious?

That will depend on what is making the tapping sound. If it is coming from the top of the engine, it is likely to be the tappets which will quiet down when they get oiled and warm.

When I first start the 2008 Toyota Sienna the valves sound real loud for the first 2 or 3 miles.....even sounds like a diesel engine as it starts the pull. I took it to the dealer and they said the noise...

something is restricting the flow to the valve lifters. I like Marvel Mystery Oil brand
to clean oil passage and quiet noisy lifters. may take a week of driving to notice the difference. If that doesnt help I would find another dealer that will take a little better look at the problem

Tapping sound in the engine started 2 days ago. The sound comes and goes at startup (not always present at startup), and disappears on deacceleration. Engine oil is OK. Temp doesn't register above normal. ...

Usually caused by a failed hydraulic lifter. You can verify by removing the valve cover and finding a valve with excess clearance. The lifter/adjuster should be replaced ASAP to avoid damage to the cam lobe. If you would like instructions on replacing the part, please get back to me.

I have a 2009 with the same problem that the dealer told me was "normal" engine noise. BTW, our loaner does not have this noise.

I just bought a 2008 Sienna w/ 44,000 miles. When the engine is cold, doesn't have to be really cold, I hear this ticking noise (not loud) when engine is under slight acceleration between 1500- 2000 rpm....

Sounds like you are describing lifter noise. Go to the car store and buy a pint of Berrymen's Chemtool. Next time the engine is cold, pour the Chemtool into the engine oil. Do your normal driving for the next few days or weeks until you have 150-200 miles (none of them should be highway miles) on the engine, then have the oil changed. Drive for 2000-3000 miles, and do the same thing all over again. Repeat this a couple of times. If the lifter loosens up, your good to go. If it doesn't, then it will have to be repaired by tearing into the engine.

Oil light on no pressure gauge sounds like now

you need to go to a parts store and have your OBD scanned and it will give you a code and then you will no what the problem is. from what you are saying I highly recommend you go no where else except a parts store to get that scanned. Low oil pressure will destroy an engine.

also, if you damage a lifter, bend a valve, or throw a piston then you have to rebuild the engine.

Valve tapping noise

you possibly bent a valve ever so slight when a valve gets bent it increases the gap between the rocker & the valve
