Is the starter not engaging and is this an automatic? It its an automatic and not cranking over and battery and starter are known to be good. Wiggle the harness that runs to the starter. There is a problem with the seven way connector to the neutral safety switch will post both auto and manualwiring diagram for 1998 chev. - a652566.gif

the purple wire to starter solenoid S which is switch terminal.the battery positive cable and red fuse link wire to alternator goes to starter solenoid positive terminal.

We installed a starter into a 98 chev astro, when we went to hook up the battery the starter started the vehical with out using a key. We also checked all the wires with a multi meter and they are good,...


double check wires thick wire and next size down furthest from engin,smallest on top of coarse,closest to engine just wire from starter itself learned the hard way thursday 6/24/10

Wiring Diagram 1998 Chevy S-10 starter replacement


The starter has one large cable from the battery positive, and a wire that goes to the solenoid (Part of the starter) that becomes hot when the key ignition is turned to start. This also passes through the neutral safety switch. (So it wont start in gear) Not sure if this is what you need, a little vague.

Reinstall of Starter 1998 2.4L Chev Cavalier

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable at the battery.
  2. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  3. Remove the electrical connections from the back of the starter.
  4. Remove the bell-housing cover.
  5. Remove the starter support bracket bolt from the engine block.
  6. Unfasten the starter motor-to-engine bolts, then carefully lower the starter.
  7. Remove the nuts/bolts that hold the starter support bracket to the starter.

To install:
  1. Transfer the starter support bracket to the new starter if the starter is being replaced.
  2. Raise the starter into position and secure the starter using the starter motor-to-engine bolts. Tighten the bolts to 32 ft. lbs. (43 Nm).
  3. Install the starter support bracket-to-engine bolt to 24 ft. lbs. (32 Nm).
  4. Install the bell-housing cover.
  5. Install the starter electrical connections on the back of the starter. Tighten the S terminal to 22 inch lbs. (2.5 Nm) and the battery terminal to 106 inch lbs. (12 Nm).
  6. Carefully lower the vehicle, then connect the negative battery cable.

looked in the book and confirmed with an online diagram, for the spring positions and proper spring to bracket plate assembly. Thanks for all your help and sugesstions
