Car may have a short. something in the run circuit may be drawing extra current. With car running, try pulling fuses until the battery light goes out. This will tell you which circuit is drawing a lot of current. It will not necessarily be the circuit that has a short. Note each one that causes the light to go out, then consider which of those should have a lot of current and which should not. troubleshoot the ones that should not. If you get this far and get stuck, get back to us. We may be able to give you hints by looking at the wiring diagrams.

The battery is run down too low. When the light came on, alternator stopped working- the vehicle ran off the battery, until the lights and other electricals ran the battery down too low.
Recharge the battery, and have the alternator tested. It will probably need replacing. If you bring it into a parts store, they will test it for free.

1997 bmw 328i dash lights all lit up at once and after several minutes they faded, and eventually the headlights and dashboard lights dimmed.

Alternator. Have it tested with a voltmeter while on the car and running. Or take it off and have it tested. The current to run the car and the accessories is from the alternator when the engine is running. The battery light coming on alerts you that the alternator is not doing its job.

Why wont it start

Has the charging system (Alternator) been tested for proper output? Is the battery ok, have it tested. Autozone (and others) do this test for free as well as checking the Alternator output, it is one of the two causing the problem I'm sure. If the charging system is ok the voltage measured at the battery at about 1000 RPM should be at least 13.4 volts D.C.

While driving the car turned off and will not start. Just prior to that the wiper was slowing down like it might stop working. When trying to start it the is some click click sounds. Any idea what is...

It's possible your alternator has failed. Remove the alternator and have it tested at your local parts chain. Please let me know if you need instructions or have any other questions.

Battery keeps running down, what is the best way

The new alternator may have a closed regulator draining the battery, put a volt meter,or test light in line with the ground cable, remove the ground cable, and put the test light clip on the ground cable, and the tip of the test light to the negative battery post,or contact,it does not have a post,If it lights the test light, and it does not fade off, then there is a draw, unplug the alternator regulator plug, see if that turns the test light off,if it does, then the alternator is defective, then if need to continue testing, remove the interior light fuse, completly, and then pull one fuse at a time,to see if the test light goes off, when it does, that is the circuit that is drawing the battery down. The clocks will pull to many amps sometimes and cause this also,be sure to disconnect the battery over night to make sure the battery is good also,so you wont be doing all this for nothing, and you may want to have the battery load tested.

Hi every time i accerlate hard with headlights on the fade on and off also abs and handbrake lights flash on dashboard

This sounds like a faulty voltage regulator in the alternator. A faulty battery could also cause similar symptoms. Have battery and alternator tested. The alt. should produce @14.4v, regardless of engine speed. Battery should show 12+ volts with engine off. If battery is below 11v, it may have a dead cell or short. Replace faulty component and retest both. If unsure, replace battery first and retest, as you will probably need one anyway if the alternator is bad. DO NOT disconnect battery cables with vehicle running, as this can damage alternator or computer.
