Absolutely, the A/C system is equipped with a Hi/Low refrigerant pressure switch, if the refrigerant level is low, the switch prevents the compressor from engaging to prevent damage to it. If your system was working, there are refill kits available at most autoparts stores with refill directions included. Do not overfill system.

Ac works fine and sometimes clutch disingugesa and blows hot air

This is usually caused be low Freon in the system. There is a low limit switch and when the pressure drops the switch opens the compressor stops.

What size is the low size ac adaptor for 1992 dodge dakota

What you are looking at is a system made for R12 instead of R134 freon.
Around 1993 most models were switched to the new freon at that time.
If this is the case, you need the adapter fittings sold to convert it, which is sold at most auto parts stores.
Keep in mind you can not mix the two freons, and there may be other components such as the drier and expansion valve that will need to be changed to accept the R134 gas.

If the low side is at least 35psi, you could have a weak ac clutch or a faulty low pressure switch.

It doesn't sound like you have low Freon, but you could. The clutch not engaging indicates low Freon. The fact that it works are all would indicate that it is not low on Freon. The only thing that would be wrong is the pressure switch is not working when it gets hot. The pressure switch works by shorting the float side connection to ground then there is enough pressure in the system.

1996 Dodge Dakota 2.5 , AC runs fine if I connect compressor directly from battery, is there a way to test the AC switch?

if the compressor only works when directly feed power from the battery it sounds like the a/c system may be low on freon causing the system to shut down until its fixed.it could also be a pressure switch in the system,it should be checked out at a shop for proper freon level and pressure to know what needs repair instead of guessing.

The Low Pressure Side connector will be smaller than the High Pressure Side connector so the refill hose will fit properly only on the Low Pressure Side.

How do I charge A/C on my 97 dodge dakota

Hey Steffney..my name is Keith...to charge ya A/C on ya Dodge Dakota..you need to determine how low your R134a is...after that..you go to the autoparts store and buy the size can of R134A that you will need..some of the cans of R134A will have a servicing connector with it..some wont...so...when ya get that figured out...you start your truck and turn the A/C on maximum cool...and ya blower to high blow...then ya find ya low pressure side servicing port(its usually located on the right side under the hood..and it looks like an oversized tire inflation valve..but made out of aluminum) and you connect the can of R134A to it and follow the direction on the can of R134A....i hope this will help ya.

get the a/c condensor recharged with a freon substitute, i use "red-tek 12a refrigerant", it is much safer than freon and is ozone friendly.
