Question about 1998 Mercury Mystique

2 Answers

I have shorted out the electrical system in a 1998 mercury mystique. I still have somethings like the horn, headlights and dashlights but not the power locks, windows, brake lights, signal lights etc. \it also will not start anymore. It will turn over but will not fire up. There is power at the engine compartment relays for things that are not working but no power at the interior fuse box. This all start from trying to fix the heater fan that no longer worked.

Check all of the fuses located in the black box under the hood close to the battery on top of the inner fender. All power to the car begins there. Check for large fuses 30 amp to 60 amp. Make sure the heater fan is left unplugged. When working on components under the dash always disconnect the ground cable from the battery

Try a continuity test, not sure where to find the electrical scheme but if you obtain it, use a tester or borrow one to test the continuity of the wires of both taillights, could be simple as a cut wire.

200 Cougar blowing headlight fuses

First look for a short or where a wire is exposed and fix that with electrical tape.

If you can not find it, then often I will put a Re-set fuse that does not blow but resets and costs about $5 at Autozone.

Good luck, J
