1996. Which color wires go where?

There should have been an instruction sheet in the box with the sensor. If not, you may have to go back to the store and ask for one.
Most sensor brands are different.

O2 sensor cavalier

There should be a wiring diagram with the new sensor to show which color goes where. Go back to the store where you got it and see if others of the same type have instructions packed with them. If they do, have them photo copy the instructions.

The wiring diagram shows the wiring color code, Power rating and connector plug used. The wiring diagram explains the vehicle's electrical connections with color code. It's a bit complicated to understand.

Bosch 02 sensor downstream on a 1996 Jeep grand cherokee 4.0 motor. I have no wire harness to match the colors to. bosch has two white, one grey and one black. Jeep has orange/green,black/brown,black/blue...

The two white are the heater
The black the ground
The gray the O2 Sensor output,
you back probe to check Voltage
& Switching Times

The vehicle wiring harness does not have to match
the sensor, BUT -- you need to have the same
connector on the sensor

If you have a universal cut & splice, you have junk,
and we given the wrong part

Get a Bosch or NGK, OEM sensor & just
plug it in

If the unit has a polarity plug on it that will just plug in one way, don't worry about the colors. You can verify at the part store that you have the correct O2 sensor. If you do, it can take up to 50 key starts berfore the computer resets itself or you can ask the people at the parts store to reset the light. Most of them do it for free if you buy your parts there. Either way, the light will eventually go out if the O2 sensor was truly the problem. Meanwhile, you cannot pass any state inspections with the light on.

Bought a universal O2 sensor for my 2001 Mazda MPV...part is great but new part has one black wire, one gray, one plain white and one with small writing.. bad OEM part has two black wires, one BLUE and one...

If you are sure that the paper work does not have your combo on it, go to a local parts store that has access to a wiring diagram of your MPV. Use the info on the paper work to identify which wires are ground (usually the 2 white ones are) and then match the remaining two. Often the gray one is the power for the heating element in the sensor. But don't guess at this - it is critical to match the wires properly.

Sometimes can be prematurely dirty air filter, sets off the air flow sensor, which sets off the o2 sensor. So might try new air filter first and erase codes and then see, before you spend more bucks than you need; then if codes return, do the flow mix sensor.
