Question about 1995 Ford Aspire

My brakes are messing up. I have to push the pedal all the way down for the brakes to start and then they don't work well. I was accidentally driving with the parking brake on, did that mess it up? when I realized it was on I turned it off but the brakes still didn't work good.

You need to check you brake shoes on the rear to see if you have worn them out. If you find the brakes are worn out replace them. If they are not worn out they may just need adjusting or they may be glazed over from the heat and need replacing. They are self adjusting but you have to back up quite a few times for them to adjust themselves after you ran with the parking brake on. You can manually adjust them yourself. Adjust until the wheel locks up and then back off just enough for the wheel to turn freely.

Most vehicles have a brake sensor on the top of the brake pedal and it may be out of adjustment. It's very simple to adjust. Try checking that out. If it's out of adjustment it doesn't know you're foot is on the brake until you push the pedal very hard. But don't adjust it too far the other way or you're brake lights won't work right.

The air seeping is a dead giveaway. Your power brakes are now manual brakes, but stiffer. The diaphram in the brake booster has torn and the hissing noise is the engine vacuum escaping (you hear it louder when you depress the pedal right?). Replace the booster and you will be fine. The brake lights probably don't work because you can't push the pedal down far enought to release the switch. Please rate. Thanks.

Brake lights & Hazzard lights don't work; fuse ok... High mounted center brake light works... Turn signals work...suspect problem is multifunction lever Power drain to battery constant...2...


As for the brake lights push brake pedal down while pushing on and wiggling the hazard switch.If the brake lights come on then replace the multi-function switch.

Sounds like you have a bad multiple function turn signal switch. A couple things to try With your foot pressing on the brake pedal, Press the four way flasher button up and down, press and hold it down, pull up on it, or wiggle it. If the brake lights come on during any one of those replace the switch. With the key in the run position pull, push, the turn signal lever slightly. If the turn signal or brake lights start to work replace the switch. Let me know if none of those work, they usually do, and I'll get you some more in depth diagnostic info.

Have someone in the vehicle slowly push the brake
pedal,never pump.

When you are driving, do you pump your brakes,NO

Pushing the brake pedal only moves the piston in the
brake cylinder about 1",that is all
That amount of movement will build up to 2,000 lbs
of pressure. So no pumping,does nothing

As the person is pushing the pedal down,someone
else opens & then closes the bleeder valves while the
pedal is still going down.

Then you wait on the person in the car to start over.
Real simple.

Assuming you paid for all that work,why do you have
issues that you didn't have before.

Don't want to discuss what the pros do,but we have
a thousand people on this site every day with problems
that they shouldn't have and are lighter in the wallet

Check that the pedal height isn't sagging due to low brake fluid level. Also check for adjustment of the brake light switch or the BPP (Brake Pedal Position) switch.

Brake Pedal Position (BPP) Switch Removal & Installation To Remove:
  1. Disconnect battery negative cable.
  2. Disconnect brake pedal position (BPP) switch electrical connector.
  3. Remove self locking pin.
  4. Remove switch from brake master cylinder push rod.
  5. Remove push rod spacer.
  6. Remove push rod bushing.
To Install:
  1. Install push rod bushing.
  2. Install push rod spacer.
  3. Install switch to brake master cylinder push rod.
  4. Install self locking pin.
  5. Connect electrical connector.
  6. Connect battery negative cable.

It maybe, I don`t know the vehicle personally but on Trucks and Buses, when this occurs, it usually points to the master cylinder piston seals which moves in and out as the foot pedal is operated. Does the hiss alter as the pedal is pushed down?? Does the hiss reduce or increase as the pedal is pushed down?? If it does, I think you`ll find that it`s this air seal between the piston and cylinder that`s failing and not the servo. Whether you car works the same way, I don`t know but I presume it must. Ian

Brake lights stay on even when car is off


Brake lights- check your brake switch (stop lamp switch) usually right above the brake pedal if this gets knocked out or out of alignment the lights will come on just like you pushing down on the pedal.

You linkage is working properly it sounds like, especially if the indicator for "D, R, N", etc are lining up. However the linkage or the neutral safety switch may need to be adjusted. More than likely, it's your neutral safety switch.

The brake pedal release has nothing to do with the neutral safety switch when switching gears.

The brake pedal release is just a safety to prevent you from pushing the gear shifter accidentally. Actually, you should be able to start the truck without holding the brakes.

If the neutral safety switch is bad or misaligned, it'll do exactly what you're describing. If pulling it down in neutral starts the truck, then that's a sure indicator.
