Depends on the engine year. On modern, computer controlled cars, a bad egr valve will turn on the 'check engine' light and cause you to fail an emissions test. On older, cars, 70's and early 80's, it doesn't have much effect, but it is easy and cheap to replace it. On newer cars, it is essential, hard to find and a PITA to replace.
yes, if you live in CA, any trouble code will cause you to fail. Your valve is shown below and the position sensor is integrated into the valve. A new valve is $75. Generaly o2 code comes up when anything at all is wrong in the combustion process. I'd have the egr valve tested and cleaned as well as the passages to and from it...They often get plugged up with carbon.
well if its poping an o2 code try a couple things before you start spending money. when it starts up listen for a rattle from the cattilitic convertor. if you have a bad rattle replace the cat that might solve both codes if no rattle replace the o2 sensor, it might just be that. hope this helps
ERG or EGR valve?. well if you dont mind the check light coming on and the engine to run like **** in the future, you might want to change it, espcially if you live in an emission state, they wont pass you part if failling.
