Question about 2005 Mazda Tribute

4 Answers

I have a 2005 Mazda Tribute, front wheel drive, 4 cylinder. When I accelerate I here a gear/whining sound. It goes away when I take my foot off the gas. It also goes away if I put it into neutral while driving. It started out like humming, but now is gear/whining. I have full acceleration though. Doesn't feel sluggish. Last year they rebuilt my differential but I don't know if they lied.

There is no more warranty on the differential left. I'm not even sure that's what it is now. But if it was, how hard is it to change one?

  • thesingr Oct 08, 2010

This noise only happens over 20mph and while accelerating.

Hi!!
Take vehicle to Jiffy Lube or similar oil change place and have them change the differential oil, ask them to check for metal shavings. Also ask to have an additive or add the type of fluid that will help to reduce or remove the noise.
Good Luck!!

It could be the alternator, AC compressor, power steering pump or serpentine belt ilder tensioner pulley. Mostly we have been finding alternators whining. Compressors and water pumps usually grind or growl. if the noise only happens when the car is moving it might actually be a bit of gear whine. if it makes the noise all the time it could probably be belt noise.
You'll need someone reving it slightly, to make the noise appear, while you localize it. Once localized, cost can then be estimated.

Thanks. Keep updated for any more query. You can rate this solution and show your appreciation.

There should be a decent warranty on a rebuild - you might want to check on the warranty.. It could also be the trani.. Even though automatic trani is hydraulic - it can make some pretty awful sounds..

Good luck ;)

I have a 2005 Mazda Tribute (automatic). Last year I started hearing a whining noise during acceleration. I took it to a shop and they said it was the differential and said it would be $2,400. Then they...

you were "touched " by that shop as bearings cost around $80.00 aud and labor is around 6 hours to r& r diff center and re race the diff center
total cost under $800.00 aud
fully re-raced diffs that you could diy would be a bit less
I would go to an accredited service center and have they check for wheel bearing failing all around

Loud whining noise on left turn (Mazda Tribute 04)

sounds like a wheel bearing maybe faulty from your text it sounds like it could be the osf you could try jacking vehicle up with engine off handbrake applied and in neutral spin the wheel and see if it makes noise or wiggle it to see if it has any play possibly take off greade cap and see if any grease in bearing /
