Question about 2004 GMC Envoy

Vehicle would not go above 20 mph but RPM's off the chart. Dealer has stated transmission is shot due to having water in it. Said maybe water has dripped down from windshield into tube. Wondering if that would be the only way water could get into it. They are replacing transmission (I think) but should they be looking at anything else for the cause?

Could be water ingress if you live in a wet area with a high rainfall ,but from what you describe the gearbox is faulty and needs replacing ,next time buy a diesel manual version which is a lot cheaper to run

I have a 2002 Mazda MPV. When do I turn on/ off overdrive to my transmission


By default, your automatic transmission has a torque converter that is the main focus to your car\truck changing gears. I had one break on me in a Nissan Sentra and was glad I was close to where I was going because I would have otherwise been stranded.

If you live in a mountainous area and do a lot of traveling going up and down hills, your best bet, as long as you are above 58 mph(like going thru Denver on Interstate 70 and going west thru the Rockies, then it is okay to leave the overdrive on. I would, however, recommend that going up an incline of more than 30* then you may want to turn it off until you have reached a sustainable speed. If you are towing more than 800 lbs on a trailer on an incline of more than 20* then you would want to turn the overdrive off as the torque converter putting your vehicle into overdrive with a heavy load can cause the converter to snap within the transmission and you would be dead in the water.

If you live in a more plain-like state then the only time you really NEED to turn off the overdrive is if you are hauling a large amount of cargo any real distance or rarely get over 4300 rpm due to such short traveling distances. Overdrive function is primarily used to cut down on the amount of fuel needed in order to take long journey on Interstate or State highways that allow for speeds faster than 55 mph.

code p0720 refers to output shaft speed sensor(OSS)--circuit malfunction====causes--wiring--OSS sensor--ECM/TCM
of it has just happened check the wiring and connections to the transmission for water and corrosion or replace the OSS sensor in the transmission.

Maybe a transmission problem?


If you're only in "D", you should switch to "OD" when driving at higher speeds. "D" only allows you to move up to third gear whereas "OD" will move you into fourth. You're over-working your transmission by driving in "D".

Car shifts


Hi I am Vortash sounds like Torque slip check your fluid levels in the transmission. Rpm will rise if there is weak drive then as the vehicle reaches change speed it will snatch because the rpm is high .. if your levels are ok you may need to get your Torque converter checked out .. hope this helps regards Vortash

RPM shot up to 4.5/5 while idling


I have a 2003 Acura TLS, bought new Oct 2002 currently with only 42600 KM (real low) My problem appears to be the same. I noticed specificly on warm days after 30 min driving, when coming to a stop, the idle was about 3500 RPM. Parked the car, turned it off. When starting up again, RPM stayed at 3200, also couldn't put into drive (possibly safety mechanism to prevent damage to transmission). After 30 min when cooled, was able to start again - OK.
I brought it to the dealer thinking possibly connected to FAULTY TRANSMISSION". There was a special extended warranty issued by ACURA >>> http://www.internetautoguide.com/auto-recalls/09-int/2003/acura/tl/index.html I believe it also includes 2002's. Your Dealer should check into it again.
My dealer, ACURA LAVAL (in Que, Canada) seemed to look at nothing else than the transmission. In fact, 2 days after not hearing from him, he told me that they had already ordered a NEW Transmission which is being put in as I write.

Try this relearn procedure hopefully it will help

Vehicles equipped with engine or transmission computers may require a relearn procedure after the vehicle battery is disconnected. Many vehicle computers memorize and store vehicle operation patterns for optimum driveability and performance. When the vehicle battery is disconnected, this memory is lost. The computer will use default data until new data from each key start is stored. As the computer memorizes vehicle operation for each new key start, driveability is restored. Vehicle computers may memorize vehicles operation patterns for 40 or more key starts. Customers often complain of driveability problems during the relearn stage because the vehicle acts differently then before being serviced. Depending on the type of vehicle and how it is equipped, the following complaints (driveability problems) may exist:

Harsh Or Poor Shift Quality
Rough Or Unstable Idle
Hesitation Or Stumble
Rich Or Lean Running
Poor Fuel Mileage

These symptoms and complaints should disappear after a number of drive cycles have been memorized. To reduce the possibility of complaints, after any service which requires battery power to be disconnected, vehicle should be road tested.

Vehicle Preparation

Ensure all components are connected. Ensure transmission fluid level is correct. Warm engine to normal operating temperature. If vehicle has been repaired, perform KOEO and Continuous Memory Code Self-Test and ensure fault codes are not present.

Computer Relearn Procedures

Idle Relearn Procedure

Place automatic transmission in Park or manual transmission in Neutral position. Ensure the emergency brake has been set and all accessories are turned off. Start engine and bring to normal operating temperature. Allow manual transmission vehicle to idle in Neutral for one minute. Allow automatic transmission to idle in Neutral for one minute and then to idle in Drive for one minute. Once initial relearn is complete, process will be completed during normal driving. Always complete the procedure before returning the vehicle to the customer.

Drive Cycle Test (AOD-E, AXOD & AXOD-E TRANSAXLES)

With transmission gear selector in Overdrive, moderately accelerate vehicle to 50 MPH for a minimum of 15 seconds. Transmission should be in 4th gear. While holding speed steady, lightly apply and release brake for about 5 seconds. Stop and park vehicle for a minimum of 20 seconds with transmission gear selector in Drive. Repeat procedure 5 times. Always complete the procedure before returning the vehicle to the customer.

Drive Cycle Test (E4OD)

With transmission gear selector in Drive, press Overdrive Cancel Switch (LED should light). Moderately accelerate vehicle to 40 MPH for a minimum of 15 seconds (30 seconds above 4000-ft. elevation) Transmission should be in 3rd gear. While holding speed steady, press Overdrive Cancel Switch (LED should go off) and accelerate from 40 MPH to 50 MPH. Transmission should shift from 3rd gear to 4th gear. Hold speed steady for 15 seconds. While holding speed steady, lightly apply and release brakes enough to turn brake lights on. Maintain 50 MPH for about 5 seconds. Stop vehicle for a minimum of 20 seconds with transmission gear selector in Drive. Repeat procedure 5 times. Always complete the procedure before returning the vehicle to the customer.
