Question about 2001 Pontiac Bonneville
Most likely an evap system fault code stored in engine computer. Best bet and cheapest thing is go to the dealer and buy a new cap. Install the cap and drive the car for a few days if the light goes off, your all set, if not you need to check for codes. Then probably find a leak or a faulty evap vent valve or purge valve.

Most likely the fuel cap did not seal properly. Could be an operator error last time you fueled (happens all the time) up or the cap might not be sealing properly dues to a worn out gasket and needing replacement.
Your On Board Diagnostics system has observed an EVAP leak and triggered the check gas cap light to come on. At the same time the EVAP system sent a signal to your OBD system ane most likely set a Gross EVAP Leak code. That explains your check engine light being on.
I can't be 100% sure of this without reading the codes but I'm a good 99% sure this is the problem.

The system is set up by GM to have the cleared with a codes cleared by a OBIII hand held device which can be purchased at many auto parts stores. Auto Zone can clear it for you for free if you ask them to do so. If the code does come back you may want to purchase a factory fuel cap instead
