Question about 1997 Ford Taurus

What are the odds if you just clean up the parts to the heads and the engine do the new gaskets put it all back together, that it would be ok for extended period of time?

Why wouldn't you have the heads, pressure tested and the valves done?

How do I remove the cylinder head on a 2.2 engine?


You take the bolts out of it but then you have to put it back together and you will needs new head bolts, a torque wrench, the torque specs, new head gasket.......It's a big job if you know nothing about working on a car engine. Actually replacinbg the head gasket is the easiest part of the job. getting to the head and getting everything disconnected and MARKED is what takes the time.

Do i need to have my 2004 dodge intrepid anti theft code reset through a dealership if the heads and head gaskets were replaced? the entire top of the engine ws taken apart adn put abcl together.


i would disconnect the battery. removing both the positive and negative battery terminals. with both ends disconnected, hold the two terminals together for about 10 seconds. this will proform a hard reset on most chrysler vehicles. also, if this doesnt work, try turning the key to the on position, and then proforming the hard reset procedure.

Would be in the head.Either cracked or gasket blown.Take it back and have them fix it right or get your money back....

Were to start when changing cylinder head gasket


put in time and remove valve cover, front engine cover, timing belt ,exhaust at manifold, intake manifold and remove head bolts, pull head clean all surfaces replace gasket after head ck for cracks follow specs on bolts and put back together in a shop in would take about 4 to 6 hrs to do .

97 saturn sl2 died while driving , pulled first spark plug boot and found filled with oil


The head gasket needs replaced. This particular Saturn is known for having this exact problem, and 9 out of 10 times, replacing the head gasket fixes it. I just did it myself for $35.

Go to checker/autozone and get a head gasket (should just need the gasket and not the entire kit) and a tube of RTV silicon grease to help make the seal.

Unhook everything from the engine (plugs, wires, etc, and unscrew the head. There should be about 10 or so screws surrounding the black plastic head cover. You'll find things a mess in here, but clean it up best you can. Remove the old gasket and clean the entire gasket area completely and make sure its dry. Put down your RTV grease, the new gasket, some more RTV, and screw the head back on. MAKE SURE YOU DON'T SCREW IT TOO TIGHT. The screws only need to be snug. Tighten it like you would a spark plug. Put everything back together and you should be good to go. Might run like **** the first half mile or so.

I washed my engine the other day 97 Jetta gl 2.0l, and I must have gotten water in the motor somehow because there's coffee cream colored chunks of oil in my motor i must have a blown head gasket how do...


If you have a blown head gasket the only option you have is to replace the head gasket.Also take your oil pan off and clean as much of the gunk as you can out of it.When you take the motor apart you want to make sure that you clean the parts so there free of any grime on both the top end and the bottom end.When you put it back together iI recommend that you run engine flush through the motor to clean any residual sludge.Hopefully this will help clean the oil ports in the bearings of any sludge.I would flush it at least 2 times and then put oil in it.Change the oil after 2000 miles and then change it every 3000 miles.Just remember you must make sure that you clean the motor real good before putting it back together.You could save yourself any future problems by also replacing the connecting rod bearings.

How to change a blown head gasket


Changing a head gasket is a major engine repair. Unless you have a good set of tools including a torque wrench and a good general knowledge of how things work, it can be a tough job. If you still want to try, I would highly recommend a repair manual for your vehicle such as a Haynes manual that covers 1997 Toyota trucks. It will have pictures of most of the parts as well as the specifications for tightening all the bolts when you are ready to put it all back together. Basically replacing a head gasket requires that you do the following: Drain the coolant, drain the oil. Remove fuel lines to and from the engine, remove the electrical and vacuum lines that lead to and from the intake manifold,remove the alternator, air pump, ac compressor, tie it back, don't disconnect the refrigerent lines, remove the valve cover remove the intake manifold, remove the front engine cover which will expose the timing belt. Remove the timing belt, remove the cam shaft. You should now see the head bolts. Remove the head bolts. Carefully tap on the head until you can loosen it from the engine block. You may have to drive a wedge between the head and the engine block to force it to loosen up. This is a delicate operation, because if you damage the head during removal, it won't seal with the new gasket. You will need a top rebuild gasket set for your engine. Somewhere around $150.00. Every gasket surface needs to be cleaned to the bare metal without scratching the surface. Any old gasket material left on the parts will cause leaks. Once you get the head off, spend another 150.00 or so to get it boiled out by a head shop in your area. They will also test it for leaks and cracks. If the head is cracked, it will have to be replaced. If you don't get it checked for cracks, this whole exercise will be wasted if it turns out to be a cracked head instead of a blown head gasket. Anyway, reverse everything, tighten it by the book to specified torque put in new oil and antifreeze and you are set to go. I replaced my first head gasket when I was about 15 years old. It took me a couple of weeks and I broke about 6 or 7 bolts off on things like the intake manifold, front cover etc. I learned a lot from that old '58 ford. Good luck, and get that Haynes manual.

Leaks


the only thing that causes this is a blown head gasket or a cracked block, the head gasket is the most common problem, the block being cracked rare/

How to replace the thermostat


The thermostat is in the front of the engin inbetween the radiator and engin. Follow top radiator hoze thats connected to the metal pipes by the altenator on passengerside down the hoze will go down into the front of the engin and between radiator, then will stop at a 3 way connector where it splits into 2 more hozes. if u get under neith the car and look up at that connecctor there is 2 bolts remove those bolts and the thermostat is in there. U may need to pry it out a little with a flat head screw driver. then clean the rim and inside where the thermostat was and get gasket sealer and spread it on like butter all over where gasket was and where anything will touch when bolted back together. then sit the new gasket in the top part first then place the long skinny shaft of the thermostat in first into the upper part of the connector (where u took it out) then put the bottom part and top part back together (make sure everything is dry b4 its put in and together) then put the 2 bolts back in the housing and ur all done. Just make sure u check ur coolant cause u lost some in this process. Let the car run for a while and cheak for leaks the refill coolant again after it has taken some into the engin. check coolant levels for a few days after this and for leaks aswell.
