Its always hard to know if you bent valves or not with out taking it to a garage. Ask yourself these questions. When the belt broke did you continue to try and drive it? Did you try and run the vehicle after the belt broke and how how was vehicle did the temp spike up and stay hot for long?

If you answered no then chances are your probally just fine with a new belt and reset the timing

I was driving at 70K/h, does a 1.6 opel Astra 16v 1996 model bend valves when timing belt snaps

ANY CAR IF YOU CARRY ON DRIVING IT WITH A BROKEN TIMING BELT, YOU WAN'T ONLY BEND VALVES ,YOU MAY HAVE TO HAVE A COMPLETE ENGINE STRIP DOWN, OR IT MITE BE CHEAPER TO REPLACE ENGINE, OF COURSE THIS IS IN SEVERE CASES, THAT IS WHY IT'S RECOMENDED TO REPLACE THE TIMING BELT AROUND EVERY 30,000 MILES
NEVER DRIVE A CAR WITH A BROKEN TIMING BELT.
GET A MERCANIC TO GIVE YOU A ESTIMATE ON REPAIR

Does a broken timing belt automatically mean bent vales?

No you don't always bend valves typically with 4 or 6 cylinder engines are equiped with free floating engines that when the chains or belts break it allows the engine from creating greater damage to other parts of your engine

Does the timeing belt have to be on for the crank to turn the cam when instilling the timeing belt?

Are you replacing a broken timing belt? Or are you replacing a belt because it's due by miles? If the belt is broken, i strongly suggest inspecting for bent valves. Daewoo is notorious for bending all valves and breaking valve guides in the cylinder head when the timing belt breaks. The broken belt is also common.

Bend valves

broken timing belt will bend valves on interference type engines. Usually a valve job with all new valves will fix if pistons are not damaged. Job might not be worth car if its old.

A broken timming belt on a ford focus 16v, will there be damage done to the head and valves?

Highly probable
A broken timing belt will result in the pistons hitting the valves this can either bend or break the valves causing damage to the head and possibly to the pistons as well.

TIMING BELT BROKE

The timing belt connects the pistons and the head valves so that they all go up & down in the correct sequence. Turn over the engine with a broken belt and they could hit together - rather like hitting your fists together very hard.- and one or more of them could bend or break needing either replacement pistons, valves and/or head.
On the other hand you could have the luck of the devil and only need to line up the various timing marks and fit a new belt

The Toyota Celica Supra has the 5M-GE engine which is NON-interference motor. The worst a broken belt will do is leave you stranded.

Cambelt sliped or broken. does the valves bend.

what is the liter size of your engine? the 1.8L is an interference engine. generally all Audi engines are interference engines, and timing belt breakage can bend valves, the sure way to determine without detailed maintenance information, install a new belt, once the belt is on immediately run a compression test, if timing marks are good and compression fails, valves are bent.
