Question about 1995 Chevrolet Silverado 2500

1 Answer

My truck had a vaccum belt burning smell, I replaced the fan belt and the idler pulley as recommended by parts store to fix problem. I tried to replace tension pulley also but could not get bolt loose to replace, will try again later. After belt replacement still had smell and truck did not restart. jumped truck and it started immediately, but when I tried to back out it died and would not restart again. I think the alternator is shot and that is the source of smell and starting problem, but would like to confirm before replacement. Wil I need to replace both batteries, or will they charge after alternator is replaced. Thanks in advance

Sounds like your alternator. you can pull of and have tested for free at most parts stores. batteries should be ok. it is best to charge them and not just crank up and let vehicle charge them from completly dead this will cause an extreme pull on the charging system and can damage alternator again

There is a loud noise near the alternator and after it runs it smells like something burning could it be air pump it has fairly new water pump and new alternator

i would check your tensioner and idler pulley. you may have a bad bearing and its dragging the belt causing friction which then creates the burning belt smell. remove your serpentine belt and spin all pulleys by hand p/s, alternator, water pump, tensioner, idler, a/c. if the pulley is stiff or feels rough then thats the component at fault and you would need to replace that certain component and its also best practice to replace your belt now too.

I have a 1995 ford taurus 3.0 6 cyl. that started squealing about 3 weeks ago changed the idler pulley and still makes this sound. It does it upon starting and when driving and very rarely stops. I took it...

The replacement idler pulley could be defective. This is a frequent failure item in Ford products of that vintage. The belt could have gotten worn by a wobbly pulley. The replacent pulley could have been installed without making any adjustment.

I have a 2002 taurus se and the fan belt broke, i replaced it and it broke again, i smell a foul odor coming from the vents

Check for a seized pulley

With the belt removed turn each pulley by hand, they should all move smoothly without barely noticeable play. I suspect that you may find the idler pulley is either locked in position or locks up occasionally. When turning the pulleys try putting some up or down pressure on them.

The smell you are detecting is most likely the smell of the burned belt. They do tend to give off a smell that keep on giving long after the bet is gone.

When I start my car it squeals really loud and smells like a vaccuum belt is burning. it also overheats while sitting still unless the air conditioner is on and now won't pass emissions. what could be...

Your squeal sounds like you have a pulley frozen, or sticking, that the belt can't turn, and it will burn. You need to determine which pulley or idler pulley it is.
The cooling problem may be related (water pump) , or just a failing fan switch, or fan. See if you have two, as some vehicles have one, and a second for air conditioning.

Problem with replacing serpentine belt on ml430

Routing can be a problem, wrong belt can be also as stated before. I had to take replace the idler pulley which i recommend doing when replacing the belt. I routed the belt then placed it into the idler pulley then slid the idler pulley onto the boss that that the idler pulley tightens onto. I thought it was the routing even took the belt back, but when i did the above I was done in 5 minutes after spending an hour an a half.

Daewoo Leganza 2000 timing belt broke

Hi.
If the idler pulley, broke, with the car running, (I think is the most probable), There is no way to fix the car just replacing the timing belt and the idler pulley. This is an interference engine, that means if the timing belt or the idler pulley breaks, you need to replace the whole cylinder head, that's because the valves are bent. I just fix my daewoo, I tried first to just change the idler pulley and set up the time, but it did not work. I had to replace the whole head cylinder, timing belt and pulleys.

I got the information to set up the timing belt from a Library, The program is Mitchell on demand.

Thanks
