Question about 1996 Oldsmobile Achieva

My car is leaking water from the back of the engine I dont know if it is a hose or my heater core going out but when i go to drive it steam blows out from the air vents????

My 1997 isuzu rodeo overheats and has no heat what's wrong


Could be that the heater core is clogged... for the car to operate at optimal temperature (not to cold, not too hot) all cooking system had to be working properly, I had a '97 camaro, it had 2 previous owners and I had heater core issues and also the hose that goes to the expansion tank was clogged, causing the water to build enough pressure to escape trough radiator cap... anyways they're two totally different cars but seems to me you need a cooling system flush.

They sell a kit which includes a T fitting that goes in the hose flowing towards the heating core, and allows you to connect a garden hose to push water through the system with radiator cap off so all can circulate and clean up. Being careful (water pressure in houses is more than the system is designed to withstand, for instance a radiator cap can be 15 - 20 psi, depending on area, some homes have above 40 psi) is a great diy little project. Alternatively you can pay a mechanic shop to do it. After a flush, drain the radiator from bottom plug and refill with coolant always. Don't run your system with water and don't drive an overheating car, it will blow a gasket and that's when you kiss your car goodbye, repair is not only expensive but blown gasket might leave sequels on engine.

I have a 1997 bmw 318i that is overheating. Steam comes from back of engine compartment and the fan is not engaging. What could the problem be?


It is likely that the heater core has sprung a leak, or the hoses leading to the heater core have failed. This would cause a loss of coolant that would make the coolant temperature sensor think it wasn't necessary to turn the fan on, and would cause steam to appear to rise out of the back of the engine. If you turn the heater on inside the passenger compartment and get steam through the vents, it's DEFINITELY a heater core breach. Otherwise, check the hoses leading to the heater core and make sure they are still connected and not leaking. Good luck!

It sure sounds like the heater core, especially if you have water leaking inside the cabin. The two heater hoses only go from the engine to the firewall, and do not go into or through the firewall. They connect to the heater core right at the firewall.
Check carefully around the back side of the engine and the heater hoses, though. If a freeze plug is leaking, water will be dripping off the bottom of the engine. If it is leaking before the firewall, that would not be the heater core.

Could be the heater core, or where your heater hoses connect at the firewall. Heater core leak would more than likely put steam in the vents of you car when heater is on and hot and fan on. If the leak is just in the engine compartment, it`s a hose or a loose connection.

It sounds like it, feel the rug on the passenger side if its wet then that will confirm a heater core problem.

Hello jgreenley32: My name is Roger and I will help you. Steam from the a/c and defrost vent generally means a leaking heater core. The steam usually has a really sweet sickening smell to it. The longer you run the engine the thicker the steam. The way to tell for sure it is the heater core would be to bypass the heater. To do this just remove the heater hoses from the heater core at the fire wall area. Not sure where they are just follow the hoses from the engine back to the firewall on the passenger side of the truck.Remove the hoses and plug them off or put a splice between them. Start the truck and warm up the engine. If the steam is gone ? Then the heater core is bad and needs replaced. Should you need further help please just ask. Please rate the answer. Can you take off the 2 lines going into heaTER CORE AND BLOW THEM OUT WITH A AIR LINE WILL THIS WORK?


Yes you can blow through a blocked heater with air and it should work,dont blow too hard in case the core is weak and starts leaking,and make sure that you try and seal the end where your blowing for the air to not leak back at you so you have enough pressure,should work fine

Its leaking water from the fire wall and steams up insiide thre car


either the heater core has sprung a leak, or the hose and its discharge is shooting inside the passenger compartment.my bet is on the heater core.you can by-pass the heater core.
remove both hose's that go to heater core and connect hoses with a piece of tubing, or make a loop with on hose to connect both water outlets .

If you are loosing coolant and you see water under the car after sitting you have a leak. The most likely area is the heater core as you are getting steam inside the car. If you smell anti freeze that is another confirming item. Check all the hoses and connections first before replacing the core. Good luck.
