Engine's making a knocking sound when idling. The check engine lights come on, and I've already replaced the sparkplugs. Another mechanic said it might be something else. And advice would be great

You have a check light---We don't have the codes, you do?

Spark Plugs--What was that supposed to do?

Another Mechanic--might be something else--Want to share that with us?

Find a repair shop, explain in detail all this info, have them diagnose your main concern.
Just what you want fixed and wish to pay for,not what they want to pitch you.

Many older Ford products don't have anti knock sensor circuit so most likely your hearing your cylinder valve's death rattle. Higher OCTANE gas will help. Break a valve junk the car.

Yes, the ignition timing could be off enough to cause the symptoms and the check engine light.
I would take it back to the shop and tell them to set base timing, clear the code, and refund you the cost of the knock sensor and labor.

Losing oil pressure when at idle. pressure is fine when driving

A comparatively quiet engine is often a worn out engine.( Much of the knocking sound in an engine is caused by compression and expansion of gasses, which in a worn out engine is reduced due to leakage of gasses beyond the piston rings or valves.)

You will first have to have the engine pressure tested on each cylinder to ascertain the overall condition.
Usually there are one of two reasons for a low oil pressure warning light or gauge reading.

No.1: The engine is badly worn and oil pressure can leak beyond the piston rings and into the cylinder.

No.2: The oil pump is close to failing or has already failed.

There is also the slight possibility that both of these faults have occurred at the same time.

Check engine light on but no codes

The check engine light will come on when the ECM detects knock, it will only stay on if excessive knock is detected. I would replace the fuel filter and check your fuel pressure.
Could also be a bad knock sensor as the ECM will also advance the timing to make the engine knock. If on knock is detected when the ECM is doing this it will light the check engine light.

Do you have a service light on or check engine. If the car shakes when it is not moving it is not the brakes.I would guess an engine misfire or poor engine preformance if it does it while idling. An 11 year old Volvo is probaly ready for some new plug wires and spark plugs if it has not already been done.Good Luck!

Oh Oh, better take that to a garage. When under power there is no knock but idling there is a knock? Sounds like a bearing on the crankshaft. To find out start and let it idle then disconnect and then reconnect the sparkplug wires one at a time. If the knocking stops, that cylinder is bad In any event it is bad news, rebuild or new engine
Sorry, Merry Christmas

Nothing to do with valve control but o2 sensor should be replaced and also sounds like the engine is misfiring when gas is applied, this may be caused by a bad coil or sparkplug.when was your last tune up?, i would replace sensor and also make sure there are no other codes , even check for history codes.

if there is a knocking sound the computer will start retarding the timing to get rid of engine knock thru the knock sensor. Make sure you are using the correct grade of fuel. it will be listed in your owners manual. the improper grade of fuel can cause detonation in your engine. giving a knocking sound. if the change in fuel doesn't help you may be looking at mechanical repairs. hope this helps. mike

engine knoking could sudjest that their may be water in the gas tank, Cylinder head may need spring adjustment or it may need the most simplelest thing... the CORRECT type of oil change. Electricaly you may whant to check the sparkplug cables and distributor or modulle, sparkplugs or any relay that could cerrespond to the gas pump. Finally check the engine for timing, timing belts or worn sprokets.
