Under your hood, should say either DOT3 or DOT4 brake fluid on the cap. It just unscrews, or pulls off. Use the brake fluid it recommends on the cap. There will be a lower and upper limit, so keep the fluid between the lines.
Note, ....if your brake pads are getting low on wear, your brake fluid will also be low, so you might want to get the brakes checked. The fluid level will come back up when all brakes are new, if you have no leaks.

After i did a brake job how do i get the brake light off

Check the fluid level in the master cylinder reservoir. If its low add fluid. If its full check the e-brake lever to make sure it is all the way down. It is possible that the level sensor in the reservoir is bad also. Let me know if you have any questions and I'll do my best to answer them. Thank you for using FixYa.com!

Where do I add brake fluid to my 1999 VW New Beetle? When I open the hood I only see the locations to add oil and coolant.

It should be under the hood on right on the driver's side look by the firewall there has to be a reservoir on top of the master cylinder attached the brake booster. Good luck

I need to top up the power stering fluid and need to know what tipe to use 1988 chevy silverado C3500 454 The power steering looks like it is incorperated into the brake booster

power steering is at the front of the engine and runs on the belt. The reservoir cap looks like this:
73b4b95.jpg To top off steering fluid, use standard steering fluid.

The reservoir in front of the brake booster is the brake master cylinder reservoir. To refill, use standard brake fluid. If it the truck is using brake fluid, check for leaks at the back of the master cylinder and at all wheels.

Please let us know if you have more questions.

How to bleed brakes on 1500 1999 silverado I lost brakes completely but there was still one-half in reservoir, replaced some brake lines, having hard time bleeding

In order to do this. Jack up the car on tire at a time. Look underneath the car and you should see a bleeder valve. Attach a hose to the valve, then run the valve into a jar filled with brake fluid. Have some apply pressure to the brake pedal. Open the valve insuring the hose is in the brake fluid. Do Each wheel on wheel at a time. Refill the brake resivor each time After bleeindg all brakes refill resivor. .

I am replacing the rear pads and cannot get the caliper to compress using a c-clamp. Is there something special I need to do or know on my montego 05 car to get the caliper to compress? Sincerely Desperate...

One, take your brake fluid reservoir cap off.
Two, use a thin piece of wood to help you compress the piston on the caliper....do it slow. This way, you don't create a lot of pressure to the reservoir and it won't overflow.
Three, these are the steps to removing and replacing the pads for the rear. It does mention a special tool....but you can use a c-clamp for the same purpose:

Rear To Remove:
  1. Check the brake fluid level in the brake master cylinder reservoir.
  2. If required, remove the fluid until the brake master cylinder reservoir is half full. CAUTION
Care must be taken when servicing rear brake components without disconnecting the parking brake cable from the brake caliper lever.
  3. Remove the disc brake caliper. Support the caliper with mechanic's wire. CAUTION
When the brake pads are separated from the brake caliper, new brake pads must be installed. The brake pads are one-time use only.
  4. Remove and discard the brake pads and spring clips from the brake caliper anchor plate. NOTE: Do not remove the anchor plate guide pins. The guide pins are press fit to the brake caliper anchor plate. If the guide pins are damaged a new anchor plate must be installed.
  5. Inspect the brake caliper anchor plate assembly.
  6. Check the guide pins and boots for binding or damage.
  7. Install a new brake caliper anchor plate if it is worn or damaged.
To Install:
NOTE: The left caliper piston turns clockwise and the right caliper piston turns counterclockwise.
  1. Using the special tool, turn and compress the brake caliper piston into the cylinder.
  2. Clean the residual adhesive from the brake caliper fingers and pistons using the specified brake parts cleaner. CAUTION
Do not allow grease, oil, brake fluid or other contaminants to contact the brake pad or caliper mating surface. Do not install contaminated pads.
NOTE: Install all the new hardware supplied with brake pad kit.
  3. Install the new spring clips and brake pads.
  4. Position the brake caliper and install the 2 bolts. Tighten caliper bolts to 23 ft-lbs (31 Nm).
  5. If necessary, fill the brake master cylinder reservoir with clean brake fluid.
  6. With the engine running, apply pressure on the brake pedal to seat the brake pads.
  7. Test the brakes for normal operation.

Brake fluid resrvoir

The best way to confirm your thoughts is to look for a rubber pipe coming off the reservoir about halfway down from the top. If you find this it confirms that the brake reservoir supplies the clutch. Any DOT4 brake fluid will do.
