Question about 1997 Toyota Avalon

2 Answers

My temperature gauge never goes above mid-way, but the engine smells hot. The coolant looks like there is rust in it. I am thinking I should flush and fill the coolant. The fans do come on in front of the radiator. No signs of leakage.

does it look like rust or could it be thinned out oil? if it's oil you might have blown a gasket or cracked the block. does the car still start? does it make any noise or shake? do you know if your thermostat is working properly?

Car starts and runs well - 20 mpg highway. 230,000 miles. Oil level is good and looks normal. No noise or shaking. I do not know about the thermostat.

Suggest you do flush the radiator please!!! the hot smell is just a hint of problems to come. check the belts to make sure they are all good.your water pump will not tolerate rust!! rusty colored water or antifreeze. also drain the overfolw jug when you flush. rusty coolant is an enemy to your engine, if you smell a sweet smell while driving, you may have a leak already, look for spots where you park. listen for bubbling sounds when you park after driving. hope this helps!!

Your 1997 Avalon will not work the same as when it was new. Midway is normal for a 1997 car without signs of leak. If you haven't change the coolant since you acquired the car, then flushing the old with new is the best suggestion.

What could be problem if the temperature is more than half on the gauge and i just change the head gasket, replaced water pump, thermostrat but the temp is still more than half on the gauge

Blind guess would be the temperature sensor for the electronic fan on the radiator. Other thing that may be causing higher temperature then you want is that coolant system has rad that is partially blocked or that you have a buildup of sludge in the cooling system. Just a blind guess. More help will probably be along shortly.

Hope this helps

Ford Freestar 2006 Engine is temperature is normal but , the dashboard gauge is showing high temperature. Which parts need to be replaced to bring back the dashboard gauge to normal.

How do you think the engine temperature is normal if the gauge is telling you the engine is overheated?

make sure the engine is filled with coolant both at the reservoir and at the filler cap on the engine itself. Usually this cap has the thermostat below it. If they are full, try burping the system by squeezing the radiator hoses with a sealed system and the engine hot. Wear gloves!

if that doesn't fix it, buy a new thermostat. They are cheap and easy to install.

If if that doesn't fix it then you are looking at emptying the coolant system and back flushing it after adding something like CLR or Radiator Flush.

Might also be a fault with the pump or a slipping belt?

the usual suspects are:
stuck shut thermostat
clogged raiator
dead water pump
low coolant level

Have you checked your cooling fan to see if it is working propely? Let the car idle and get warm and listen for the fan to kick in (if they are electric) or just watch to see if the fan starts to spin faster if it is the old school type with a clutch. Have you replaced the thermostat? A bad one will let the temp rise since it opens too late and then the temp will drop off. But it won't due this only at a light and it will do it infrequently.

1992 Toyota Celica - coolant spraying out of overflow, fan didnt seem to be going on. Smells like coolant, so dont think that it is the head gasket. Temperature gauge going up now, but not at first....

There is a fan coolant temperature sensor on the bottom of the radiator, it has an electrical connector on it, with the key on disconnect the connector, if the fans run constantly with the connector off replace this sensor.

I would verify that the actual temperature is increasing and its not a gauge\sensor issue.

If the indication is indeed correct, it may be time for a coolant flush and a good look at the radiator.

Temp gauge is in normal, 200 degree, range when starting. Within a few minutes of driving goes up to 250, right below orange line. No leaks found, coolant level appears fine. Any ideas?

250 DEGREES ENGINE GETTING TOO HOT.SOUND LIKE CLUTCH FAN FREEWHEEL.IF CLUTCH FAN DONT LOCK IN OR HAVE RESISTANCE TURNING BY HAND WHEN ENGINE HOT.FAN CLUTCH IS BAD.IF FAN CLUTCH OKAY COOLANT LEVEL CORRECT.I WOULD CHANGE THERMOSTAT FLUSH OUT ENGINE AND RADIATOR.IF ENGINE TEMPERATURE STILL READS 250 DEGREES OVER FLOW JUG OR RESERVOIR NOT BOILING OVER THE COOLANT TEMPERATURE SENSOR FAULTY.

The thermostat may be wearing out. A thermostat controls the engine temperature to keep it at a consistent temperature, The other fan will probably turn on if you turn on your Air Conditioner.

Engine temperature reading high

Faulty temperature sensor I think, thats what feeds the gauge. If the vehicle is genuinely running hot there would be a lot of pressure in your radiator causing overflows/steam/coolant smell.
Those sensos wear out and commonly go to short which shows a higher & higher reading until they fully short out
...hope that helps.
