I have a 1999 w reg toyota picnic 2.0 and been told that if i advanced the timing I would get more mpg is this true

Hi Clive:
Interesting question.
My experience is that if the timing is advanced too far it will cause pre-ignition problems which is waaay not good.
My suggestion would be to make sure the engine is properly timed, and then to make sure that maintenance is done that gives the best mileage. Things like changing spark plugs, cleaning the air filter, keeping the radiator and engine clean, changing the oil, and running tire pressures at the high side of the acceptable range.
That, and your driving habits like avoiding rapid acceleration and excessive speeds. It will be the best you can expect.
Hope this helps.

What does it mean when the red temperature light starts blinking on my toyota corolla verso. The car is not overheating

If the coolant temp light is on then there is an issue. You don't say on what basis you believe the engine is not overheating but in any event take the car to a mechanic and get an independent temp gauge hooked up to the system to check coolant temperatures.

If the engine is in fact overheating, because the coolant temp is too hot, you will cause expensive engine damage if the cause is not identified and fixed.

2003 Toyota Hiace 5L Diesel overheat problems resolution

cause of engine overheating is either the rad fan not working well or luck of circulation of coolant through the engine, if rad fan is working well then might be your radiator {rusty, dirt or clog rad core or leak} make sure your rad cap and all hose and clamp is in good condition as well not preventing any air getting in the system or escaping coolant check also or replace the thermostat might be defective

I have replaced my radiator as well as my thermostat on my 2003 for taurus in the past 6 weeks and it still overheats. I need to figure this out. I just spent 1200 dollars fixing the car overall, and this...

Overheating can be caused by:
  • Cracked cylinder head or damaged head gasket: a common problem if the engine overheated and cold water was added. You can check by carefully removing the radiator cap while the engine is cold and not ruunig, start the engine and if the water in the radiator as seen in the radiator cap hole 'bubbles' violently or you see milky/oily floaters, then this is most likely the issue - water continuously blowing out of the exhaust, after the engine has warmed up of course, is also a sign.
  • Engine timing can also cause overheating: is the engine runnig smoothly
  • Lean fuel mixture can also cause overheating: does the engine detonate?
Hope those tips can help! let me know how you go.
