Why does a 2004 Chevy Tahoe need a new style fuel pump harness connector?

    On my Tahoe the fuel pump stopped working and I ordered another one. After dropping the fuel tank and taking the old fuel pump out, we put it back in and it now runs. Could it be just the connector that need to be changed?

Hello and welcome. GM redesigned the connector to be able to handle a higher amp load. some of the old stlye connectors had some issues with the connector and terminals getting too hot

    fuel pump failures are pretty common on these vehicles. it is mostly likely that you needed a new fuel pump. it is in rare cases that the connector is the root failure. the fuel pumps draw too much current, this causes the old style connector to get too hot. that is why they change the connector style

Fuel pump wiring for aftermarket GM fuel pumps


When replacing fuel pumps in chevy or gmc trucks and suv's the aftermarket fuel pumps come with new plug and wire connectors. Which requires you to cut off the old pigtail and connect the new pigtail to the vehicles wiring, the reason the manufacturers of the new fuel pumps did this is to fix problems with the old style connector that was on the factory unit.

My 1997 chevy tahoe is hard to start, I changed the fuel filter and spark plugs but it still takes a lot of cranking before it will start


the pressure regulator may be leaking. pull he vac line and see if its wet. wet is bad. Also these fuel pump connectors are known to overheat from poor connections. Do a search on gm fuel pump repeat failures and overheating connectors. Also the fuel pump could be leaking down so the line needs to be primed. Try cycling the key about 3 to 5 times before you start it. The pump will prime for 3 seconds each time before shutting off. If this helps the problem is the fuel pump.

Dark green provides power to fuel pump relay from the ECU. Orange wire at fuel pump relay is power at all time and is provide from the ECM/Bat Fuse at fuse block (Left side of dash). It also connects to the fuel pump oil pressure switch. The grey wire at relay provides power to the fuel pump and fuel pum oil pressure switch. The red plug thats tape to harness from relay/fuse center is the prime connector..

Take your vin number to any Chevy Dealer's Parts Counter. They can pull up the parts diagram and give you a part number. The ring is most likely a dealer part. So you will need to go to the dealer anyway to buy this part.

Ecm 1 fuse blow when attemping to start vehicle 1999 chevorlet tahoe replaced fuel pump


So as I understand it the fuse only blew after a fuel pump job.

There is a TSB on repeated fuel pump failures with these trucks. The fix is to also replace the harness connector that plugs into the tank harness.

Unplg the harness and inspect it before you turn the key again if you suspect this.

dear sir, should be on trans crossmember on drivers side look at fuel lines the sensor has fuel that goes thue it and one wire connector with four wires in it .....good luck

Sorry there is no fuel pump reset on the Tahoe. If you have no fuel pressure, check the fuses and relay,and wire harness to the fuel pump from the inside frame rail on the drivers side. If you can hear the fuel pump working, check the fuel pressure at the shredder valve and there should be 60 to 66 PSI, if you don't you can try checking for 12 volt at the fuel pump wire harness at the frame rail.
