Question about 1999 Chrysler 300M

It is difficult to shift into drive and impossible to shift into the manual shift gears. What is the fix?

Check for a bent or damaged shifter linkage or cable, may be an internal problem in the tranny itself. shifter may be coming apart internally also.

Your Gear Shift Rod Cylender Tube is cracked or broken. Will have to drop your steering wheel colum to replace. This is common. Ford has modified the new tubs.

Owners of a Toyota 4Runner might panic when the gearshift begins to have problems. Knowing a couple of the things that often go wrong in a 4Runner can help a driver diagnose or even repair the gearshift himself. Following are some of the more common shifting problems with 4Runners, and a bit of information on what to do next.
Shift Solenoids

  • One of the leading causes of gearshift issues in automatic 4Runners is a bad "shift solenoid." In automatics, shifts are controlled by shift solenoids, electrical coils that change gears automatically. These solenoids can go bad over time and cause stuttering between gears, or prevent shifting beyond a certain gear. Shift solenoids can be purchased and replaced on your own. By consulting the owner's manual, you can determine the location on the valve body of your vehicle and check shift solenoids for breakage or rupturing. Replacing these on your own isn't terribly difficult, as long as you are certain the shift solenoid is the problem. Tutorials are available in car repair manuals and sometimes are posted online.


Transfer Case
  • When a 4Runner begins to have shifting problems, the transmission is often fingered immediately as the culprit. A driver might change the transmission fluid and filter, only to find that the car slips into the same shifting problems. Four-wheel-drive vehicles utilize a transfer case that ensures shifting between two-wheel and four-wheel drive. If a vehicle has a difficult time shifting into two-wheel or four-wheel-drive high, but works on four-wheel-drive low, examine the transfer case. Common problems include linkage breaks and worn gears.


Shift Lever Seat
  • Sometimes, the gearshift on a manual simply doesn't feel right. The vehicle might come out of gear too easily or have a problem upshifting or downshifting. The shift lever seat is the well in which the stick shift rests. After years of use, pieces might break off, bend or rust, causing problems with gearshifts that don't stay where they should or have a hard time getting there. Fixing your shift lever seat is quite simple and takes about 45 minutes. Once the boot cover and plate cover have been removed, you need only examine, remove debris, grease up, and reassemble. Such a fix can cost serious time and money at a mechanic, so try it on your own if you have the time and the proper equipment. The proper equipment includes a screwdriver and/or wrench to remove the boot cover and plate, a soft cloth to remove dirt, and grease for lubricating the shift lever.

HARD TO SHIFT INTO GEAR. IF I SHIFT INTO FIRST BEFORE I START THE TRUCK IT WILL SHIFT EASILY IF STARTED IT HARD TO SHIFT.


hi it sounds like your clutch is on its way out thats why when the engine switch off its easy for the gear to go in but when the engine is running the flywheel is turning and makes if very difficult or sometimes impossible to engage the gear as the clutch is worn and wont disengage .

if you have a hydraulically assisted clutch, check the reservoir. it's located on the firewall in the vicinity of the brake vacuum booster. if it's low/empty, fill it. you may have air in the system which will require bleeding. what is the mileage? you may be due for a clutch. if you google, "hard shifting manual trans" you will gain more insight on the matter.

GEARBOX PROBLEM


I hate to break it to you, but one of the most common problems with a 90-95 mr2 turbo or non turbo, is the transmission. It's sad to say but it sounds like your syncros. It is one of the biggest flaws with the car. I love mr2's. I have owned several, and everyone of them have had the same problem. It's most common in the shift between 1st and 2nd gear, but it will eventually start to go in every gear. up shift or downshift. It will start gradually, and eventually get to the point where you wont be able to put it into gear. Makes racing a nightmare. If you slam it into gear when it's not going, you run the risk of grinding your gears, bending your forks, and other various costly repairs with your transmission. I suggest that you don't punch it. Shift before 4500 rpms in all your gears until you can afford a complete rebuild. When you do that make sure you use the proper gear oil. If you use a cheap one, or have a non toyota mechanic do it, they may use a gear oil that will actually destroy your syncros faster. Trust me the car is a wonderful car. You won't have more fun in another car until you drive a Corvette z06.... I say that just cuz it is the only other car in the world I will drive beside my mr2.......Best of luck mate.

Jeep Wrangler 1998 straight drive has difficult times going into reverse gear. I don't drive it every day,usually towing it behind my RV. It seems better when I drive it more,but is still difficult to...


if this is a 5 speed manual transmission...all you need to do before putting your jeep into reverese is puting it into first gear and then shifting it to reverse to avoid any grinding or problems shifting into reverse...this isn't a problem just a poor jeep design by not installing an extra gear to eliminate this grinding or shifting problem
