Question about 2001 Buick Regal

Intake Manifold has leaked coolant into cylinders and locked engine. What would be the cost to repair this - new gaskets etc

This one is a little different and harder to diagnose....as you said it has locked the engine....this is called hydraulic lock and is due to water NOT being compressible......so if the engine is locked what further damage has this caused ?????

I have seen conrods bent and vales damaged due to hydraulic lock......I would suggest having the cylinder head removed at least to inspect.

If somone advises you that all you need to do is to replace intake manifold gasket, and let the engine sit for a few days as the coolant drains out of the cimbustion chamber, they are offering you ill advice, and you should be wary.........

I had my intake manifold gasket change along with the valve cover gasket. White smoke is still coming out of tailpipe?


White smoke may indicate an internal coolant leak or low coolant reservoir levels. Coolant leaks can also leak into the oil of your car causing it to be frothy or milky looking smoke. You might have a cracked head gasket, engine block, or cylinder head which are all caused by overheating.

I've got a 2002 Buick LaSabre. Firewall looks melted..car gets hot on short run. I do have small leak brake fluid. Could that be the problem?.


That would not cause the engine to get overheated. It may be too late to save your engine, but check if you have coolant loss and brown sludge on the oil dipstick, or if under the oil fill cap there is a milky brown substance. This is evidence of coolant getting into the oil. This engine in LeSabres has a common problem of intake manifold gasket failure, leading to loss of coolant that winds up in the cylinders and into the oil. If not driven much or if the engine did not get too hot, the cylinder heads and head gaskets may not have been ruined, but if overheated badly, the engine may be a total loss.

The intake on the engine is two parts: an upper intake manifold that is plastic (and just waiting to fail-many owners have had to replace this) and an aluminum lower intake manifold. The gaskets under the lower manifold are the ones that develop leaks. Because GM used inferior factory gaskets (also made of plastic) as a cost-cutting measure. They took a very good engine, well known for durability, and shaved costs with inferior gasket material-go figure.

Instructions

1. Removal

Unscrew the bolt that holds the negative connection to the Impala's battery. Set this bolt aside for later use.

Remove the engine cover to access the intake manifold and manifold gasket. Disconnect the throttle body inlet duct from the engine.

Twist off the radiator cap to allow draining of the coolant to flow more smoothly. Place an empty container beneath the radiator's drain plug, and remove this plug. Allow all of the engine coolant to drain into the empty container. Replace the drain plug once you are finished.

Tag all of the electrical wiring and hoses before removing so that reconnection is precise to factory settings. Remove these parts, individually, from the intake manifold.

Loosen the bolts that hold the intake manifold to the Impala's engine block. Lift the intake manifold from the block once all bolts have been completely removed.

Use the flat-head screwdriver to pry the old intake manifold gasket from the engine block. Discard this part once you have removed it.

Clean the engine block thoroughly with the engine degreaser and linen cloth. If necessary, use a gasket scraper to remove excess buildup and grime.

2. Installation

  • Coat the top and bottom of the new intake manifold gasket with a chemical sealer so that it bonds to the engine block securely. Position this new manifold gasket so that it lines up perfectly with the cylinder ports of the Impala's engine block.

Place the old intake manifold on top of the newly-installed manifold gasket until it aligns with all of the holes of the cylinder flanges and manifold gasket.

Attach all of the bolts with your hand to the manifold. Once all bolts have been positioned, use a torque wrench and apply 15 foot-pounds of pressure to the bolts to secure the manifold into place.

Reconnect all of the necessary hoses and electrical wiring to the intake. Pour the engine coolant back into the radiator.

Reattach the engine cover on top of the intake manifold and engine block. Start the Impala's engine and check for any leaks around the new intake manifold gasket.

1991 toyota pickup, overheating problem, there is water that I know getting into the oil. I just bought a new head and gasket plus the timing cover gasket as well. ran it today and still blowing water in...


Coolant or water in the oil can be from a head gasket leak, but it can also be an intake manifold gasket or a crack in the block or head etc. I would begin by removing the spark-plugs and then pressurizing the cooling system and checking each cylinder for signs of coolant entering them. If the cylinders stay dry and coolant goes into the oil during the test you most likely have an intake gasket that's leaking. Don't run thee engine with coolant in the oil or you'll have catastrophic damage!

I have a 96 grand am and it started leaking coolant from somewhere around the manifold, i can't tell exactly where it's coming from. Does anyone know it that could be the termostat?


If its a v6 engine and the leak is by the intake manifold, then you need to replace the intake manifold gasket. This is a very, very common problem on all of GM's v6 engines. It will cost you about $350-$400 for this repair.

Oil transfering into the coolant on a chevy optra. lugs look good, compression is equal on all cylinders.


Probably has a bad head gasket that is leaking between a coolant and oil passage.

1999 Pontiac Grand Am with "lower intake leak"...What does this mean specifically? Would this mean the intake for the radiator, gasket, or valve?


Usually intake has to do with the induction system, as in intake manifold , The intake manifold can have several types of leaks, the intake can have a vacuum leak, oil leak, coolant leak or a combination of any of the before mentioned....hope this helps,

I am losing water in my 1997 suburban i have no leaks and no water in the oil but i do seem to have alot of moisture coming out of the exhaust?


This looks like you have a blown header gasket. You probably can smell anti-freeze in the exhaust.
You can verify the problem by have a pressure test of the cylinders. At least one will not hold pressure. The cost of the new gaskets is cheap compared to the labor to install them. Every item with a gasket that is removed to get the header off will require a new gasket.

the gasket you had replaced was the lower intake manifold? this gasket can leak coolant and cause white smoke to come from the exhaust. the exhaust is actually single with dual outlet at muffler. when an engine is getting coolant into the cylinder it burns and causes white smoke much like steam. if the engine is running rough and has the check engine light on then it sounds like you have either a leaking intake manifold or problems with the cylinder head or heads. head(s) could have a bad gasket or a crack. only way for sure to tell is too remove manifold or head(s). call the repair shop and demand to have it looked at again. also have another totally separate repair shop inspect it to have a second opinion.
