I read online to replace a thermostat t remove lower radiator hose and replace the stat but i have never heard of itbeing there always at hose end of upper hose am i missing something

bleed the system, I use the bleeder screw on the top of the Thermostat housing. Takes 2 seconds, easy to reach. air in the system will not allow very much heat thru the heater core.

If you were to take the upper radiator hose off the engine, and look into the resultant hole, you would see the thermostat.

The thermostat on all cars blocks water leaving the engine and going to the radiator, until the thermostat warms up enough to open.

While the thermostat is closed, water circulates through the heater hose, straight back to the inlet of the water pump. This circulation prevents hot spots, distributing the heat evenly to warm the engine up, and also brings that warmed water to the thermostat.

When the t-stat gets hot enough to open, water leaves the engine instead of circulating through it, and that allows cool(ed) water to flow from the radiator through the bottom hose to replace the water that left through the upper hose and t-stat.

The stub that the upper hose attaches to on the engine should be part of a small housing that is bolted to the engine. Removing that housing is how you remove the t-stat.

Radiator

the upper rad hose goes from the rad to the thermostate housing. this hose is @2-21/2" the lower hose same size goes from lower rad to water pump. There is a 5/8 hose from water pump to thermostate housing called bypass hose. and you have two hoses from water pump and intake to the heater core. hope this helps if not let me know thanks

Follow the upper radiator hose down to the thermostat housing. there should be 1 bolt holding it in place. it is not easy but you have to remove that 1 bolt, remove the housing and replace the stat. assy.. carefull the stat doesn't move during reinstallation.

USUALLY, the inlet to the radiator comes of the upper part of the engine and goes into the lower part of the radiator. The outlet, or return, from the radiator comes out of the upper part of the radiator and goes to the thermostat housing, also USUALLY on the upper part of the block. It's confusing cause just cause the hose connection is upper or lower on the block or radiator doesn't tell you where the lines and tubing inside is. Look at the ends of the hoses where they connect to the block. The thermostat should be under a hemispherical dome about 2 to 3 inches in diameter with a snout that the hose connects to. USUALLY the hose TO the radiator is just a snout. The thermostat housing is USUALLY up top where you can get at it. You can just call the sevice department of any Toyota dealer and they will tell you for sure. Sevice manangers love to let you know that they know more than you do. The folks at PepBoys and O'Reilly's like to show off too.
