Question about 1996 Ford Windstar

1 Answer

I just bought a 1996 Ford Windstar from a private seller. It was sold as-is. I drove it for 3 days and noticed it was running a little warm, not in the hot zone yet but close enough. I decided to check my fluids (as I hadn't done so yet), and discovered not only was it out of oil, it also had no water. So I added oil, and 100%warm water to the van while it was still warm and now there is white smoke comming from the back end with an odor. I think maybe it might be a blown head gasket but I'm not sure how to check. I called a few shops and they said that they can't tell anything unless they take apart the whole engine, and if they had to do that than I would be better off getting the work done there to save myself money because they would have to charge me $570 to just tell me the problem. Can you help me? I called a few autopart stores and they said that the head gasket cost $50, why is there such a price jump?

More than likely its the head gasket!! yes the parts cost $50, but this requires extensive labor. This requires removal of the entire top half of the engine, and may require (if severely damaged) a full rebuild. Hopefully this helpd

Not always serious Roseanne, but needing attention. You attach a code reader to the vehicle and it displays P Codes. The code tells where the fault is.

My 1996 I recently bought ran hot and by the time I parked it I turned it off and the holes busted and we replaced the holes and noticed smoke out the pipe but once it warm up got goes away.. but the oil...

is the coolant level staying full or do you have to add ? the moisture in oil cap is normal for an engine that sets, condensation forms as the engine cools down.the smoke you noticed may have been moisture burning off the exhaust as the engine warms to normal operating temp. you need to drive the truck to see if it starts to overheat or run poorly. letting it set or just starting it up for a while will most likely not help find a problem.

1996 Ford Windstar 3.8L, Brake light is on-brakes work fine

Abs light on means the ABS sytem has a fault.
You can determine what is wrong by counting the flashes (they say) and then put the data in on the web.

IE abs, windstar, failure, 3 flashes.

The brake light on is most likely picking up on uneven brake pressure, or a failing master cylinder/
You may not feel any difference yet, give it a little time, feel for a pedal fade at a light.

1996 ford taurus is losing power and rpms when engine gets warm

If it was a dealer, go back & have him scan it for fault codes. Usually cheaper to have it scanned and replace one faulty part, than replace 5 parts before you hit the right one. Autozone & PEP boys apparently will scan for free if you bought it private.
