You might have a damaged brake switch located behind the brake pedal. Reach it with your hand and verify if the switch is stuck. If when you pull it it goes back in, you have a damaged switch and needs replacement.

SOURCE: 2003 ford focus replaced brake switch lights will ...

I have the same problem with my 03 Focus hatchback! Someone stoppedme yesterday to tell me that they looked like they were always on when i was driving but when i was in "Park" they worked... This particular driver was also driving a focus hatchback and asked me if my Cruise Control was working.. It actually was not and he told me the same thing happened with his focus. He said it was a wire attached to the back brake lights that had broken. I have not yet gotten it fixed. has anyone else had this problem?

It's common for the brake light switch to go out. It's not too difficult or expensive to replace. It's located on the brake pedal assembly under the dashboard.

I have a 2000 ford escort zx2 and the shifter won't engage unless I use the override button. What is causing my shifter not to work?

There is a solenoid lock which works on the brake light circuit, if the brake lights are working it is possible the solenoid has packed up. Need to check it's operation.

2003 ford escort zx2 brake lights stuck on

there is a switch attached to the upper portion of the brake pedal, fittingly enough called the brake pedal switch. the plastic probably came from that. aside from contorting your body to get to the switch, it is relatively easy fix.

Brake lights stay on

It's probably a stuck brake light switch. Look around the brake pedal for the switch -- it could be dirty or broken or loose from its mount and jammed against something.
