My Sentra is a 1.8L with an automatic transmission and a few days ago I accidentally left my headlights on and my battery died, which has happened a few other times through out the lifetime this paticular battery. The battery itself isn't extremely old, but this particular problem has happend before right after having my battery jumped off. Right after having it jumped off I would give my battery enough time to recharge itself then I would go to leave. When I shifted into reverse the car ran smoothly, but when I shifted it into drive and went to accelerate my car was extremely sluggish like It was stuck in a higher gear. So I stopped and shut the car off and turned it back on and it ran perfectly from then on out. This has only happend maybe twice, right after I had to have my car jumpped off. But now the battery had to be jumped off again recently and I am having this problem alot. Now I might have to turn my car on and off several times before it will shift right and if I leave it running after it does work correctly it will shift properly even if I put it in park or reverse or whatever... until I cut it back off then I have to recrank it several times. It also seems to have aliittle trouble cranking. Could a new battery solve the problem?

if your car get a VSS code the Transmission control module.
Will command the Trans, in LIMP MODE.
Is mean you only will have 2 gear.
If you replaced the VSS sensor allready.
Maybe you have A electrical problem.
The First step is Check the condition of the VSS connector.
Remove the Connector and pull the wires a little each by each one.
To see if is broken inside of the Plastic cover.
IF you can
GIVE ME the Code number I will help you better.
Because is there more that One speed sensor on your trans..
Check the grounds on the Intake manifold, Black wire one of the wires is for the speed sensor.
The RED/YELLOW wire coming from the INSTRUMENT CLUSTER,
Is mean you need to check the Fuses that work with the instrument cluster. FUSE # 12 10amp, And # 30 10amp.
Located at fuse block left side of dash.
Is there a ground that work with the Cluster and Combination Meter. Behind left side of dash Black wire.
Check the Connection of the Cluster.
OK.. I hope this help on your problem.
Thank you for use fixya.
First, check the level and condition of your transmission fluid.
Have you had a standard transmission service performed in the past 50,000 miles? If not, DO IT NOW before the transmission fails completely.
The transmission service should include ALL NEW FLUID, NEW FILTER, and NEW PAN GASKET.
There could be a few things wrong. The reverse slip could be a worn sevro. the slipping on shifhting gears could be seals in the solenoid package. Try some transmission additive, this will recondition the seals. this could take care of both problems. Tranx, Lucas make good additives. There are other things in the transmission that could cause this, but for $10.00 it's worth a shot. I used it my truck for slipping three years ago and still no problems.
