Generally 5w 30 is what is recommended on the cap for most vehicles. I always tend to use 10w 30 in the summer and 5w 30 in the winter because 5w 30 is not as thick or viscus as 10w 30. Always use what is recommended by the manufacturer for the best results. This vehicle will take 5 quarts with a filter change, or 4 1/2 without. Also the filter is very tricky as i have done this one many times. I loosen the filter then pass it through the frame and out the passenger side wheel well. I hope this helps!! Thanks!!

I have a 2000 Cavalier Z24 that leaks oil bad. The oil drips off of the bottom of the engine between the oil pan and transmission. I also noticed some oil at the top where the upper cooling hose is.

With this age of engine, the most likely cause is plugged up drain holes in the head. This allows the oil that goes to the cam and valve mechanism to be retained under the valve cover and present a challenge to the old valve cover gaskets,. Recommend you remove the valve cover, make sure the oil drain holes are clear and replace the valve cover gasket.

Rear of engine, about halfway down. It must be removed and replaced from the top. It makes big a mess.

How to change oil filter for chevrolet cavalier 2000

I hate that design. I do oil changes all the time at work.
I find it easier to get it through the front passenger side wheel well.
You may have to jack up the passenger side and take the tire off.
