Question about 1991 Mercury Capri

1 Answer

My '91 non turbo Capri won't start. It just "shut off" a couple days ago It would start for a while, then once the tach hit 1.5 it would shut down. I would pull over and restart the cat and it would start, and then again die @ 1.5 on the tach, after a few times, then it would start and run good for a bit, until the last time it won't start at all. i replaced the coil and the ign control module, and i am still not getting any spark out of the coil. Also checked to make sure the serp. belt is working and turning the distributor. just at a lost with no spark coming out of the coil. Lost at what to do ?

Sounds like your computer needs to be replaced, it controls all of the ignition firing order. somethng else, the cam position sensor may be bad also, only 2 other problems I'm aware of in the ignition circuit.

This may be electrical. The ignition control modules commonly get heat sensitive on the capris (its happened to me twice), causing car to shut down at hot temps. Replace the igniter at the same time, bet this will fix it. Igniter is inside the distributer, module is on the outside of the dist..good luck...Chris

Have someone take the mass air flow sensor off and clean it with a non-chrlonated brake cleaner.Make sure its dry before reinstalled and do not touch wire inside sensor with your fingers the oil from your fingers can damage it.

On my 91 capri non turbo, the alternator is sqealing

Could be the belt or tensioner(if so equipped) was too tight and then it may have warped the pulley or ruined the alternator. The belt smoking could definately be overtensioned or the bearings are shot in the alternator and creating the friction in your belt. Check the tension specs for most vehicles is usually between 1-1/2 to 2 inches of play. Thats how far your belt can be moved up and down by hand after tensioned. Too tight and you risk burning up bearings in other places or too loose and you hear squeeking and the vehicle may not charge properly or even overheat from water pump not turning well enough.

'91 non turbo capri won't start. It just

Solved most of this myself. Changed ING. module which solved spark problem. The injectors still would not function, help came from JUSTANSWERS by idenifying a relay tucked between the left headlight motor and the coolant recovery canister. Like the IGN. module, this relays not cheap. I found a $5 dollar used replacement from a self-pull wrecking yard from it's sister car, a 1988 mazda 323.
