Question about Ford Granada

I have a mk 2 granada 2.8i.the engine cuts out every time i select drive and the tickover is eratic.

Sounds to me as if it's an elctrical fault: check the distributor cap for any cracks or tracks also check the centre contact to the rotor arm that the spring is in good condition. i hope this works as there are many silly small things that can cause these symtoms.. kind regards Ronnie

Tickover eratic


hot engine,or cold, or both? or does it even get to normal temperature? (scan it)
this is called misfire.
if idle rpm is way too low, its normal, "bad normal."
if idle is low fix that, first.
normal is 800 rpm.
ever do the 60k mile tune up? if not, bingo.

first up have the fault codes read
that will identify the sensor and items needing attention

99 grand am v6 runs great then dies, driving and at idle. within seconds of starting it or even after driving for 45min. rpm gauge jumps up and down and hesitates when accelerating. no engine light, ...


Autos can be frustrating! I call it ghost in the machine...After all that, I would check the pressure at the fuel rail. My mother's Volvo turbo acted similarly and it was because of a worn fuel pump that was regulated electronicly. After 2 Volvo techs spent an hour on it + test drives, they told me that my diagnosis was correct, the fuel pressure at the rail was intermittently eratic and performed normally most of the time. No problems since the replacement 2 yrs ago. Let me know if you make progress and I'll check with my neighbor who has one and drag races as a hobby...MK

Ford granada wont start, imobiliser might be the propblem, how do i switch off?


Some models at this time had a fuel cut off switch mounted close to the clutch pedal on the transmission tunnle.
It was to cut the fuel supply off in an accident but they can trip on theri own especially on older cars.
Just needs pushing in to reset if this is the problem.

try removing battery and cleaning all the ground under the battery tray and check main ground wire from battery to engine

Revs ''hunt'' on tickover, sometimes revs drop so low car cuts out


Thanks to some advice I have fixed the problem with my Granada. The pipe work from the exhaust manifold to the inlet manifold has a short piece of plastic pipe which needed replacing. This seems to have done the trick.

I would like to thank you for running this site. Without it I would still be re-starting my car each time I stop at a red light!

remove and plug vacume line on the distributer and find timing specs on the motor in the vehicle using timing light hook transducer cable to no# 1 cylinder set the idle to manufacturers specs make shure motor is warmed up to operating temp now point thr timing light at the timing plate on crankshaft pulley start the engine and watch for the mark on the harmonic pulley see where it is at when running now if the mark is not lining up with sugested degrees from manufacturer then u must loosen bolt on distributer only loosen 1/4 turn now rotate distributer clockwise or counterclockwise this will make the mark on the harmonic ballancer allign with manufactures required timing specs after aligning marks tighten distributer and unplug distributer vacume line and plug it back into distributer. and test if u need anymore specifics plz read manual carefully good luck
