Question about 1999 Chevrolet Tahoe
The easiest thing you can have done is take your vehicle to the local parts store and have them scan your car for free. This will let you know what emission control system is faulty. The most likely out come is a bad O2 sensor. This is a cheap part to buy and not too difficult on most cars. The hardest part is getting to it. On some cars it is very tight to work on the O2. Others it is right in the open. A shop will charge around 250 to do this or the part is about 60. I hope this helps!! Thanks!!

The "infamous" check engine light can come on for any of a couple of dozen reasons and typically a diagnostics meter is needed to determine the cause. Before rushing to the dealer or a mechanic there are a couple of simple things you can do yourself and possibly save some money. First, remove the gas cap and the replace it being certain it is screwed in completely. If that doesn't help open the hood and make sure the oil cap is secure. You might want to check your oil while your there. If this fails to correct the problem you might want to go to autozone.com and register for free. This free registration give you access to dozens of repair manuals which may have the solution to your problem

There are literally many malfunctions that can turn that light on. You probably need someone with a code reader to pull the codes and go from there.
