Question about 1992 Dodge Dakota

2000 durango electrical problem. Battery load test ok but keeps being drained. Gague shows charging near 14 volts when started for about 2 minutes then check gages light comes on and gague drops to about 8 volts. At times, before totally drainer and running, the doorlocks keep locking and unlocking when you step on the gas. When turning on a turn signal power is drained from the dash display lights and the gages cycle back and forth.

The door lock problem isnot the actuator, it's a symptom of the problem originally posted.
    Thanks anyway.

Joe,
It seems that there is a short circuit somewhere in the wiring. Please check it up throughly as it would keep posing problems for you. And it could be hazardous too. So, please check the wiring. And when you find a short, do insulate it with an insulation tape till you find time to replace the said wires.

Hi. There might be a problem with the actuator or the electrical wiring that is why the doorlock keeps on locking and unlocking. The problem you have there is purely electrical problem.

Have you had the alternator check for a bad diode it may not put out enough to keep the battery charged after 10 to 14 days. The bridge in the alternator could be weak. Hope this helps.

Have a 2000 dodge durango w/new batter, blower all lights work but battery wont take charge??????????????????????

If you have changed the battery, have it load tested to make sure it is not defective.
A tech can also check the voltage output and regulator. I am assuming you have already had these two check done as well as ECM error codes. The PCM, powertrain control module would be my next component to have checked. A dealership should have the software to check this. I believe that the OEM part runs around $8 to $900.00 dollars. You may be able to get an aftermarket replacement for around $200, but once installed electrical components are not returnable. Do not get stranded somewhere, have a dealship check this problem out!

My 1996 Oldsmobile cutlass supreme is having issues keeping charge. It won't stay running and will start only with jumper cables. As it dies all my lights in the car dim till they are not visible anym

i would try the battery drain test , disconnect the earth terminal and place an ampmeter between the battery earth pole and the battery earth cable if the read out is more than 30-50 milli amps then start looking for what or where the drain is from , as it drains so quickly i'd think it would be a high wattage user ie ignition system , so pulling the fuse's until the milli amps drop will tell you what the component is , also pull relays as one or more may be open all the time even when not required , keep me posted if you wish

Batery wont charge when u jump,, new battery 5 months ago

You need to go to auto parts store and have them check that the alternator is charging the battery. They do this for free. Also have them check the battery to make sure that there is not a bad cell in the battery. This can happen from time to time. if all of that is good u may have a drain on the battery. Check that all lights go out when u shot down the car.

Battery light stays on

Batteries are difficult to test properly. They must be tested under load to determine the internal resistance... once the internal resistance is too high then you must replace the battery. Using a multimeter test the voltage. Write it down. Then turn on the headlights maybe even the radio and the blower, wipers etc (leaving the engine off) then take a voltage reading again. A charged battery should be near 14 volts readings below 12 volts shows a bad battery.

2004 Dodge Durango. When it set over night there is not enough charge in the battery to turn over the engine. The battery is one and half years old.

Maybe the alternator is not charging the battery up well. To test, put a voltmeter on the battery, engine running. If voltmeter is less than 13.5 volts, suspect a weak alternator-have it tested.
If charging system and alternator is good-charging between 13.5 volts and 14.5 volts, have the battery tested. Even though not old, it may have a dead cell. A parts store can load test it and see.
If battery and alternator are both good, you may have an unintended drain on the battery. You can check this by, first charging up the battery, then leave the negative terminal off the battery overnight. If it starts good next day, there may be a drain, something like a glove box light, an under hood light, a radio amp left on.
Post back if you want help with finding an unintended drain.

I have a 2000 dodge durango 5.2 v8. The battery and the alternator are brand new but the amps still wont keep a charge? Can you tell me whats wrong and the steps for me to fix it?

Hi, first check voltage at the battery with the engine running. If it's less than 14 volts DC, you may have a bad charge wire of a burned fuse. If it's more than 14 volts, there is probably a draw in the truck that is draining the battery. If you have a meter or at least a test light, you can troubleshoot to the fuse circuit and then look for the problem component. This requires a few electrical skills.

Please see my tip at http://www.fixya.com/cars/r5925550-dead_battery_troubleshooting . These are generic instructions. If you get stuck or need specific instructions for your car, please get back to me with model, year and engine info.

Battery is being drained but when charged battery passes load test. gage shows charging when started for about 2 minutes then the gage drops to 8 volts and the check gages light comes on.

I would think this should lead you to think that your problem is in the components which charge the battery, and not the battery itself. Voltage should remain over 12 after it is running or the battery is not being charged. If it is not being charged, it is being drained.

What is the expected output of a alternator in a Jeep 4.0L Sahara (yr. 2000)? My Jeep's ''check gauges'' light came on, and the battery gauge dropped to nothing. Checked the alternator (with a voltage...

You shoulld expect more than 12.8 volts from the alternator up to nearly 14 volts when charging a low battery. The battery can only show the amount of voltage your alternator is sending to it after being used for a while. I would suggest that you have the battery tested & recharged completely, your voltage will be above 12 volts and if it returns to below that , you will know your alternator is not charging. Also, if you test the output of the alternator and see it is below 12 volts after the battery is fully charged at 12+ volts you will have confimed the problem also.

good luck.

Seems to be a direct short is there any common problem area to look at. It will not start with out a jump and needs to have at least 1000 rpms to keep running

charge your battery using a good battery charger, then have it load tested. After verifying battery charge and condition, put a voltmeter across the battery and check volts when installed, then check running volts. Running should be better than 13v and less than 14. Standing volts before starting should be 12 or better. With all lights and accessories turned on, running should be 12.9 or better and should not drop below 12.5 regardless of time. If after doing this, battery drains overnight you will need to put an ammeter between either cable end and the battery and begin removing fuses till the draw drops.to near zero. Whichever fuse results in the drop will be the system you need to test for a short or always on condition.
You cannot do any valid testing without a good battery and working alternator though!
