Question about 1988 Chevrolet Corvette

1 Answer

A 1988 corvette came into my shop running ruff at idle and wants to shut off. The driver side pre cat was glowing red and a bad smell of raw gas coming from the exhaust. The car has a 115,000 miles on it

The Corvette has a vacuum leak on one side of the engine (the red-hot pre cat side).

After some messing around (experimenting) please check that each plug is firing correctly. You could have poorly functioning plug(s), shorting plug wires, cracked or grounding distributor posts.

Cat converter on driver side glows bright red and car dosnt have enough power engine idles down

that cat is probably plugged up or receiving to much fuel and causing that cat to run hot

Idles ruff smells like raw gas coming out of tailpipe

Do you have a question

If you don't work on vehicles or have
professional tools, your off to a dealer or
repair shop

What OBD Codes do you have?

Did you have a scan tool put on it to look at data?

Use it like that ,your going to ruin the exhaust converters

I would stop using it until fixed

I got a 1999 ls400 the front o color converter was clogged I replaced it is still running red hot lack of power

cart before horse
the CATs job is to eat the smog, (it burns the fuel wasted)
the engine is running so bad , LOTS of raw fuel exits the engine.
fix the engine first. then the CAT will be happy. (in that order)

the cat converter is a catalyst converter, it catalyses, the fuel (in lay terms it burns it, it burns the wasted fuel. to CO2.,etc )

it burns it so we dont have to breath raw gas fumes.
that is what it does (and more) (it's does this 3 ways)

my guess, ?
  1. The CEL/SES lamp glows driving in fact 1999 cars the CEL flashes, and the operators guide says to get the engine serviced soon or you will burn up the CAT, that is what that flash means.
  2. USA cars, do that. no country stated.
  3. The CEL glows, the mech, connects his scan tool (they are cheap and every where in USA) and sees why.

Do you want to GUE$$ or TEST?
there are only 2 ways. it is your choice.

SCAN it !
get it scanned.
or get it serviced by any ASE mechanic.

Check engine

in the USA, why not say so, ???
in 1998 the USA car has (88 to now) the working CEL lamp
it glows running engine, if there is STORED DTCS.
but a good mech ,never fails to scan the car.
as the CEL DOES not glow for all FAILS>
also any 1998 that misfire very bad, flashes the CEL for a warning that the CAT is burning up (raw fuel and lots of oxygen)

so ever tune it up this decade or last 60k like the books shows?

Obd light on, idle rough, smell, no throttle

The obd light with tell specifically what it is, is it gas or rotten egg - the latter means catalytic converter, gas smell probably flooded or not firing on one or more cylinders, need more details. Also, if the light is flashing it's warning of catalytic damage - raw fuel hitting the cat, smell could be heat from cat trying to burn off raw fuel,it will glow red hot.

My 5.4 is idling ruff. Runs real ruff in gear and

You have an overrich fuel condition.
That will make the Cat over heat and in time will ruin it.
Check for codes
Check for misfires
Check O2 Sensors.
Fix the engine driveablitiy issues, and hope converter is okey. Not likely if you caught it so late ,it is red hot.
A ten year old converter being clogged, would seem to me, to have been helped along ,by lack of necessary maintainance on the engine

change the catalytic converter before it causes damage to your engine,by all means take it off and have a look at the blockage you can try to unblock it and test it out.hope this helps

1988 Ford F250, 4.9L engine. Runs sluggish

EGR is maybe stuck open. disconnect the vac hose at the EGR valve and see if the idle smoothes out. If the EGR is sitcking open, thats a vac leak. If that fixes it, replace the EGR solenoid valve.

Hi have an audi a4 which has a very rough idle and if left running starts to smell, the smell is really bad if you open the drivers door the smell appears to be coming from the middle of the car also loads...

Your car is running extremely rich and the smell you are experiencing is raw fuel in the catalyst. If you keep driving this way the cat will clog and need replacing. You probably have one or more defective ignition coils, or you coil driver stage has gone bad (mounted inside the air cleaner housing)
