2005 Chevy Malibu the gas guage has stopped working. The guage will go from full to empty over and over. The gas cap light comes on and now my engine light is on constantly. How do I get this fixed for inspection? I spoke with a Chevy dealership and for them to look at the car they are going to charge $99 then the fix extimate was another $99.

Hey the reason your gas gauge is going from full to empty is that your fuel pump which is in the gas tank has a sensor that relays how much gas the tank has in it, the sensor is gone bad and will have to be replaced. And your engine light problem is probley due to putting gas in the car while it is running, my wife has a 2005 malibu and we have had the same problems with her car hope this was helpful

Gas gauge indicator goes to empty when full

sounds like you may have a bad fuel level sender problem. as for the check engine light coming on and storing a fault code that is a separate issue.

I filled my gas tank with regular gas and 5 mins later the check engine light came on and the low fuel light came on. I turned the car off and let it sit for an hour. I made sure the gas cap was on...

Im faily certain you have a problem with your fuel sending unit. Im not sure how common that is with Chevy Malibus but i replaced that in my 98 jeep cherokee and that did the trick.

I have a 2005 chevy malibu andthe gas guage stopped marking. Now it says its on empty and the check engine light is on.I need help to know what it is.

it is most likely a faulty fuel level sender in the tank, and the check engine light is on because of a fuel level sensor code. the tank will need to come out to change.

2005 malibu gas gauge goes up and down on movement. When I fill it, it goes to empty. And engine light comes on. But mostly moves from full to empty.

Sounds like a bad sending unit or a bad gauge. All 2000 an later GM vehicles seem to have problems with their gauge clusters. Hope this helps.
