When I select 4 wheel drive, why does it feel as though it is binding or dragging and whining while driving?


Depending on the specific vehicle many 4WD have a transfer case that will lock the front and rear drives shafts together. This configuration is only for slippery conditions like ice and snow or very wet or off road. When turning the radius is different between the front and rear so there is a lot of feedback to the steering wheel. This is created by the fact the front set of wheels and the rear set of wheels must make the same number of turns because of the locked transfer case.

If you attempt to drive on high friction surfaces the stress to the drive train is excessive and will cause damage. The whine and the bunny hop is the drive train attempting to release this tension. If you were on a slippery surface the tires would have much less resistance turning at slightly different rates.

Also critical is the tire size need to be the same. However even with perfectly matched tires the problem on dry surfaces remain the same.

The AWD vehicles are equipped with a third differential that allows for the difference between the rotation of the drive shafts so it can drive on dry pavement no problem. Some configurations allow the AWD to have the transfer case locked which falls into the first category where dry pavement is prohibited.

Some Jeeps have a viscous coupling in the transfer case that permits limited slip between front to rear but the resistance to slip increases as the deference increases as in the event one tire is slipping
These Jeeps still have the lock up option in the transfer case requiring dry pavement when engaged.

The NV236 transfer case is an automatic transfer case with three drive ranges. Shifting from rear wheel drive to four wheel drive is done automatically when the transfer case shift control module receives wheel rotating slip information from the speed sensors. The transfer case shift control module then engages the transfer case motor/encoder to position the transfer case from rear to four wheel drive. When the transfer case shift control module receives information that the wheel rotation is the same on both axles, the transfer case shift control module sends position information to the motor/encoder to put the transfer case back into rear wheel drive. The three drive ranges are 2HI, 4HI, and 4LO. The 2HI position is for normal driving with the rear wheels pushing the vehicle. The 4HI, position is for driving through sand, snow, mud, gravel, or heavy rain at normal or slightly below normal speeds. The 4HI engages the front axle to allow for four wheel drive. The front axle is pulling the vehicle, and the rear axle is pushing the vehicle. The 4LO range is used for off road driving, heavy snow, deep mud, or shallow fording. The 4LO is similar to the 4HI except that the gearing in the transfer case is set for low speed and high torque. My 1987 GMC s15 automatic 4x4 pickup keeps popping out of normal gear. The only gear it stays in is 4 low. Where do I start?


I'm assuming you're talking about the transfer case popping out of 2 high or even 4 high. It could be that the transfer case needs a chain or gears replaced and is slipping on the cogs/gears. In 4 low it takes less pressure/strain to move the vehicle so it doesn't slip. I would put the trans. AND transfer case in neutral, with the FRONT wheels blocked, and NOT running, jack at least one rear wheel off of the ground, and try turning the rear drive shaft back and forth to feel the free play (free play in the transfer case, not the rear end). Excessive free play should tell you that the drive chain/gears are very warn and could be slipping. That would be a start.

95 landrover disco has problem with transmission or transfer case. will move when I put it in Lock HI and Lock Lo but will not move when transfer case shifter goes to road gears in hi or lo and will whine...


Sounds as if the gears may be broken in the rear axle, the front axle will pull the car if in four wheel drive but when in 2 wheel drive only the rear axle pulls. Get the back tires off the ground and turn the rear end by the wheels. You may or may not hear any noise but if it is in park it you should feel some resistance if the gears are in good shape, will likely turn freely or lock up completely in spots if the gears are broken.

Yes, Inside your transfer case there is a clutch that is made up of several plates that are designed to slip when there is a difference in torque between the front and rear.
If improper type of fluid was put in or if the fluid levels were allowed to get low it may have caused damage.
If indeed that improper fluid was put in, drain and refill with the proper fluid.

Sounds like what you are feeling is reffered to as a stick/slip condition in the drive shaft yoke. What this means when you hit brakes back of truck goes up some causing slip yoke to slide out of transmission some. it sticks there and when you take off it pops back in causing a bump feeling. remove driveshaft and grease the splines of yoke with a light coat of grease.

lift front axle and place on jack stands. place front axle on 4x4 and rotate wheels by hand. If front axles are harder to turn than normal then remove drive shaft from transfer case and rotate front axle once more. this will let you know if the problem is in the front axle or in the tranfer case

My 2002 2500HD 4x4 front axle not engaging


Try jacking up one side of the front and putting it on a jackstand. Then turn key on(but dont start it) and put it in 4hi. Try to spin the tire in the air. The drive shaft should not turn nor the wheel. If the wheel does then maybe the acuator is not moving in the axle. It worked when you pulled it out but it might be hanging up on something in the axle.

I have the same problem and its in the front axle..Sounds like its in the t case but its the front axle.Make sure all your tires are the same size and same air pressure and the inner front axle seals are not leaking any fluid..
