Question about 2001 Cadillac DeVille
If it was a P0741 code, the converter is not locking as designed. This does not affect the shifting and may be unnoticable to the driver. However, if the converter is not locking, your fuel mileage will be reduced. The converter clutch is designed to lock the engine to the transmission at highway speeds, thus reducing the normal losses associated with the fluid shear in the converter.
The code can be caused by a failure of the wire that signals the PCM when the solenoid is on or by failure of the solenoid itself. In your car, the wiring for the clutch is in the same cable as the shift solenoid, including use of the same fuse. For this reason, I suspect your solenoid has failed. You can test the solenoid by hotwiring its terminals to the battery and listening for a click. Remove the connector from the transmission and apply positive 12 volts to pin "U" and ground to pin "T". If it doesn't click, replace the solenoid.

The whinning noise from my experance is caused from the filter starting to get pluged in trans. restriction the flow of trans. fluid, its more noticeable when its colder out and oil is thicker. might be a good time to service trans if you havent done it yet. I'am like you i don't know of any torque converter sensor, but if it showed up it must have one, or its something else that kicked that code out, or he read it wrong. I wouldent wory about it, its lasted this long chanses are it will last the life of the car. Did autozone erase the code? If they did When it comes on again have it scaned again and see if it shows the same code, its posible, that code could have been stored in the computer from another time the chk.engine light came on and you did not see it. It only has to come on for a split secound to store a code.
