Could be one of the relays try to locate the ecm relay or fuel pump relay and swap it,

they also have a ground conector very close to the batteri most of time blak and green cables and they melt inside causing high resistance and poor conection

Car shutting off

Hi,
whilst i am not familiar with the actual car i would say...
if it cuts out immediately then its electrical...check coil, ignition amplifier etc.
If the car cuts slowly by losing power, spluttering etc it will be fuel related....fuel pump, fuel pump relay, fuel filter.
Does the car restart immediately or do you have to leave it for a while?
what happens just prior to the vehicle shutting down?

How to reset ford mustang,1998 3.8l v6 5speed

My first thought is the inertia switch in the trunk, but that is only for the fuel pump.
If you have no electrical power, something happened with the wiring under the hood.

I have a 98 expedition that starts every time but shuts down everytime too.

When you start it up don't completely release the key from the crank position, let off just enough to stop the starter, if the engine continues to run the ignition switch is defective, a common problem in this year. This is not the lock cylinder but the electrical switch located down at the bottom top of the steering column that the ignition key cylinder actuates via a long steel rod.

2000 ford contour could it be the fuel pump

Sounds like your spending alot for this problem.....if this problem is only one cylinder then changing the fuel pump won't fix it...try removing the plug wire to each cylinder one at a time while running and monitor the RPM drop for each cylinder, they should be EVEN....If not thats the bad cylinder....at this point you need to check the cylinder compression in each cylinder...they should be within 75>80% of the highest reading..if its lower you have mechanical problem..(valves/piston/etc)...if good compression then your problem is fuel/electrical..this requires testers if you got them great.... if not then....at this point I suggest take it to a dealer/shop to save you any more undue parts cost...hope this helps you..GL
