Question about 1988 Dodge Shadow

1 Answer

I have a 1988 dodge shadow 2.2L and it will start and rev to about or above 2000 rpms and when it tries to idle down it just dies. I replaced the iac and it ran fine until I powerwashed the engine bay out now it seems to do the same thing so I replace the iac again and the tps and the pickup coil and its still doing the same thing. I need help PLEASE Im losing my patience with this car...

Sometimes the coolant sensor will cause this condition. It may be in advanced mode so when it's cool it wont idle properly. Also, try spraying the wires with a little silicone spray, the wires may have been affected by the powerwash. Good luck!

Clean the throttle body and idle air control motor(IAC) on the side of it. Mostly the IAC and the hole it sets in. Also check the air filter.

What does it sound like to u when the car starts up (picky sometimes) Revs good (sounds strong) rough idle with foot on gas at lower rpms and dies without applying gas?

i'd try a fuel addative to clear through fuel,cylinder/valves and the cat converter may have a carbon/sludge build up ,cheaper than getting iac and the idle may be the blockage symptom give it a go nothing to loose, must have quite a few miles on it

The van revs up to about 2000 rpms when at an idle in gear or not but dose not do it all the time.

First eliminate all vacuum or air leaks in the system. Make sure the mechanical throttle linkage is not sticking.
You may have a bad IAC ( idle air control) but try cleaning the throttle body first. Remove the intake snorkel, have someone hold the throttle wide open for you and scrub the back side of the throttle plate and surrounding bore with an old tooth brush and some carb cleaner. Be sure to spray some into the small holes next to the throttle plate. That should help stabilize the idle. If it still has a problem, replace the IAC.

Idleing

Could be a dirty IAC (idle air control) and it's causing it to run high, also, could be a tstat going bad because it would make it run like it was cold all day...check your temp after driving for a while....see if it's lower than it should be.

1988 f150 has a rough idle

For the cost of it I'd pull IAC valve/motor off & try cleaning it & port that it comes out of. A can of throttle body spray cleaner , and 1/2hr, is all you need to try it.

Idle air control valves short out all the time on these models. You can ohm the motor to check it, but the down side to a shorted iac valve is that it shorts out the ecm if not repaired quickly. when the valve shorts, 12 volts is supplied directly to the ecm and burns the circuit board. The other option is the air flow meter, this is also a very common problem but typically a p0171/p0174 would be stored in self diag.
